Why Camzyos instead of surgery?
I am just curious - once HOCM is diagnosed, why is Camzyos recommended instead of other treatments - like myectomy? (is that what once treated this? or ablation?). I am a complete novice here with a recent diagnosis - and mainly intermittent breathlessness. I have my first appointment at a COE on Friday. My local cardiologist said that I am a candidate for Camzyos and given the expense, I am curious about this. Also, can anyone tell me how they handle the expense? After help from a person's supplemental plan (if any) and from Bristol Myers, if approved, what do people end up paying for Camzyos?

My insurance is United Healthcare and they consider Camzyos tier 3
I was really shocked last month Dec when they covered 100%
I think the meds is $9300 for 35 day supply
UHC will not do a 35 day they do a 30 day for me which cost $8800
That 30 days is really pushes it to the limit.
I had 1 pill left when my new prescription arrived.
You have to get your imaging done and consult with the doctor before they write a new prescription each month.
But from what i was told the camzyos has a long half life so if you miss a few days it still stays in your system!
Good luck with all your medical needs

2 ReactionsWow - very helpful! We have United Healthcare as our supplemental policy as well -- with Medicare being primary. So maybe this will all work out. I am going to Hopkins so I do have a REMS team and can go back and forth as needed. Your response shows that it is possible to be on Camzyos.
Yes when a camzyos rep reaches out to you they want you to be well informed and they too want to make sure its very affordable!
I know before i got on camzyos i reached out to UHC to find what my cost was going to be, they could not and would not answer the question.
The good thing is yku have a lot of people in the program that want to make sure its affordable to you, so dont sweat the cost, there going to make sure its affordable!
I been dealing with under diagnosed/misdiagnosed treatments for several years!
To the point to where i was thinking it was all in my head on my symptoms!
Camzyos has made a huge difference in my lifestyle in such a small amount of time!
Wow - this is so reassuring! I was only recently diagnosed - but have great docs now. They are putting me on a calcium channel blocker and jardiance first and then probably Camzyos. I had also called United Healthcare before the end of open season to see which supplemental plan would be best - and they also would not or could not tell me (which I consider nonsense - they could tell a customer what the range of help they have provided in past is and whether or not you should be on standard option or high option - but nope - I truly feel for those without the support of education, skills and funds in our system). Thanks again - you have really made a difference in my life!

1 Reaction@joycehocm Hi - Yes, I was tested for amyloidosis at Hopkins before we moved on to treating my HOCM. I have a marker in my blood called an M-spike that is associated with multiple myeloma (correlated, not causative). Hopkins has an entirely different team that treats amyloidosis if it is present. It is pretty rare so, if you can, I would put your mind at ease and don't worry. The heart biopsy is a bit unnerving but there is no pain at all and it is over very quickly. I was very tired afterwards. We don't live in Baltimore so we stayed overnight in a hotel nearby - which was a really good idea. I went to bed and didn't get up until we checked out and drove home to Delaware. FYI - I am not on Camzyos and have not had a Septal Ablation. My Hopkins cardiologist put me on verapamil and jardiance and I have felt really well since then! So take it one step at a time. Hopkins really knows what it is doing and they have been terrific with me.

1 Reaction@joycehocm Thank you for the update! Yes, you are in good hands at Hopkins, and I am so very glad you are getting care there. The best parts must be peace of mind and "feeling really well since." Please do write more updates in the future because they help others realize they are not alone. All of these smart and experienced doctors are helping us to live our best lives. (HUGS) Thank you, again.

1 ReactionI was a candidate for CAMZYOS and my CO E specialty cardiologist at an HCM center helped me apply for a grant so I don’t pay anything for CAMCYOS… You do have to be in a REMS program and have monthly echocardiograms for a while and then it drops down to every three months or six months after a while. I started at 5 mg and later increased to 10 mg and found it did help with shortness of breath also because they were able to decrease my metoprolol down to 25 mg at night. I am happy with CAMZYOS my gradient went from 120 down to zero.

2 Reactions@jules21 thanks and no at the time I was 57 years old and they and my insurance made camzyos very affordable $10.00 per month.
Camzyos helped in getting me stronger but it had its limitations, i ended up having septal myectomy in June of 2025, the doctors say the heart is good with no obstruction now but i have had issues with my sternum not fusing, they performed a sternal wire removal and added plates in dec 2025 and the sternum still has not fully fused so another surgery to reconstruct the sternum is being done sep 16 2026
My heart condition feels so much better i no longer get light headed standing up or walking stairs or hills! Im just dealing with chronic pain from the sternum not healing!
Its bearable it just prevents me from doing things i like to do riding my bike, picking up my grand kids, lifting weights,
Have not been back to work in over a year because it prevents me from doing my physical duties of my job! Thats the negative side!
The positive side is i get to spend more time at home with my wife and grand kids
So i’m ok with the trade off:)

3 Reactions@brumasterj Hello! Thank you for sharing your experience on taking and paying for Camzyos.
I'm sorry to read that you are going to have another surgery, at Mayo or closer to home? I hope this will be the one that cures it and you get to do those things you miss after recovery. This has been a very long year!
You are an inspiration in that your glass is half full, stating that the trade off is more time with your family. Please give an update as you move along, wishing you a successful procedure and a rapid and very low pain recovery.
