What is Normal when the end is near?

Posted by Traci @tracidw, Aug 7 6:04am

"Although nobody knows the length of time a person will live, your Mom is probably in the 2 to 3 month range."

Part of me just wants her struggle to be over - sleeping, barely eating, not knowing where she's at or why.

Another part wants the Mom I used to always have. She'll never stand up and hug me like she used to. I wished I hugged her just a little bit harder when I could. Now, I bend over her and gently touch her frail body.

So, with these opposing factions within, I'm left numb. And I feel extra guilty because I should be visiting more and I have health issues keeping me from going as often as I want. But, sometimes, I don't want to go. Overwhelmed with life and people.

Grief has been long and still, it continues... I just want to sit like the painted bunting bird I saw on this fence...

What you are feeling is all very normal. It sounds like you have a wonderful mother. Embrace the good memories. On this journey our mind WILL rob you of happy thoughts. Laugh about something you and your mom did or saw that was funny. I truly believe your mom would want that for you. She finally is allow to rest. She loves you dearly. Rest my dear rest

@vcawnjo08 Normal is only a setting on a washing machine. I have learned to embrace the "normals" in my life and learn from them. It is not easy but I have a wonderful mind and a beautiful canvas of scenery to view. I'm proof you can teach an old dog new tricks.

@kjc48 Thank you! I honestly don’t know how to describe how I feel! It is hard to be the older sister and my brother adored me as much as I did for him! I am sad that I won’t be able to laugh and cry with him! He was never married .. so I was his person and he trusted and loved my input! I took care of him when he was going through his triple bypass after he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s, which I knew he had and encouraged him to let me go with him to his first neurologist appt. He was active duty in the Navy so he will be buried with honors and he is wanting me to take his flag home! My Dad died from Parkinson’s in 2018 and he was Active duty officer in the Navy! He had honors as well! Again I was given his flag! I did give it to my son as he was so very closed to him! My son is with me now! I don’t know what I would have done without my family! I am ready a grief series that a friend from church gave me! I have chosen to remember the first time I laid eyes on my handsome husband!! That was so long ago! But.. I was smitten by his good looks and kind face! We had a wonderful life together! Again thank you!

@vcawnjo08 Yes, you are so right! We had a wonderful service for my husband! Actually he is buried near a beautiful tree! He loved the outdoors! His flowers were still fresh! Just a little down the road was the church we were married in! I loved him more than I could ever imagine!!

@sillyblone I love hearing about your family, and the flag you gave to your son. I have my father's flag too. Your brother was lucky to have a loving sister like you, and your husband too! My best to you, Karla

@sillyblone God gave you the gift of a close family - I'm glad they are there with and for you, even though you feel like their mother! That's a good thing, I'm sure for them to know they can always lean on you. And you show up every day!
My best, Karla

Everyone is different but there are some things that are similar. You need to check utube videos . Some hospice nurses have posted about when the end is near. I am sorry for your loss. And I do feel for you as well. You might need to talk to a grief counselor

@tunared A grief counselor will help you and your family to understand how to cope and deal effectively with the grief and the loss of your loved one! It may help you sort out your feelings and that is the beginning of the process! I was offered through hospice and I really was not ready ! Everyone is different how they deal with grief! Grief is different for everyone but, that being said I am more interested in finishing all the things that we are supposed to do to finish the ending of life! You know like then bank, the big one Social Security and all the other insurance stuff! It was like I need your name’s, proof that he was born, I was born and of course I was married to him! On and on! It is so ridiculously aggravating! The fact that we had done all the legal stuff seemed like it didn’t even matter!!I only have a few things left! I paced myself and it was almost finished!! The biggest one is the changes in your overall experience and pre-planning! I still have to bury my other loved one! Those things we are required to do seem trivial.. but it is necessary! I thing that I would like is a “widows” group! They get us and see it from the points I referred to as well, as the emotional support! I have plenty of support from my family , friends and my church! I’m not sure the answer for myself totally! I just know it is hard and life doesn’t always go the way we plan! I am not an expert! Please don’t let the process be overwhelming and do what fits! God gave us a brain and we have to use it and we cannot let others tell us what works for us! Good luck with whatever you choose! Hugs to you as well!
