surgeons who can opeate on mesentery

I was just dxd with a small bowel NET originating at the ileocecal valve 2 weeks ago. Grade 1, well differentiated is all I know now. I'll be traveling to Phx Mayo for the first time for my Dotatate PET/CT next week. I was assigned to Dr. Stuckey for surgery but our first consultation isn't until Sept 1.

@taly Hi and welcome to Mayo Connect. I get treated at Mayo Phoenix for my NETs. Are you from Arizona?

I don't know about removal of tumors from the mesentery without removal of part of the intestine. But I hope this may give you more information.

@tomrennie Yes, I live in Flagstaff. How about you? I was given a choice to change from Stucky to Wasnif and get an earlier appt & that the one I have an appt with will be my surgeon. I'm trying to see if one would be better for my small bowel NET which we don't yet know if or where it has spread to. Do you have any insight?

@taly I split time between Mesa and Payson. I do not know either surgeon. I have a PNET that spread primarily to my liver. Surgery isn't an option for me. I have a Net Specialist Oncologist. If they are both recommended for you, I would read their profiles on the Mayo Clinic website. See if you have a preference for one or the other. Here is a link to both of them:

Your dotatate scan will provide information necessary to determine your best options moving forward. So, you just found out about your NET a few weeks ago? How are you handling it so far?

@tomrennie I've had a rollercoaster of emotions. It was a NP at the gastro practice where I had my colonoscopy who told me. It was found at the juncture of large and small intestine. I'm so glad I did some research. She said it was not going to be any problem at all because it's grade one, and that I would be well served to go to the local surgeon and oncologist (who are not NET specialists). I insisted on a referral to Mayo.
Thanks for the links. I called the Surg Onc dept and the nurse said Dr. Wasif does significantly more of the ileal NET surgeries, so I went with him. I'll see him on 8/14 and I guess get my Dotatate PET results then. It's a little nervewracking.
Have you been on this NET journey long? How are you doing with it all?

Good morning, I recently had surgery on my mesentery and all is well. Dr George Younan, MD FACS, Medical Director of Virginia Hospital Center, Hepatobilary and Pancrearic did my surgery. I also was told by other doctors that NET located at the root of my mesentery was "not amenable"
to conduct the surgery, but Dr Younan was able to remove it without any problems.

@taly It can be a rollercoaster of emotions. I can relate to that. Hearing the diagnosis is definitely a gut punch. It takes your breath away. You just have to take the process one step at a time. It is great to do research. Education about the disease is important. Please make sure that your research is with reputable sources. There is a lot of misinformation out there. This is all stressful enough. Adding additional stress by considering incorrect information isn't helpful. I know from experience. I was diagnosed in 8/22. I have been at this for four years. I was very sick, when I got diagnosed. I am doing great now compared to then. Did you have a biopsy that diagnosed your NET? How did you learn that you had a grade 1? Thanks.

@rogerstc That is awesome that the surgery went well. You have to feel really good about your decision to move forward with it? What did Dr. Younan share with you that gave you the confidence to have the surgery, when other doctors were apprehensive?

@rogerstc This is encouraging as I expect to have mesentery surgery as well. Having the right surgeon is key!
