What happens if I go from 50 mg to 25 mg Metoprolol?
Hi all, I had an ablation about 5 1/2 weeks ago. I am still having some issues with AFIB. I also take Flecanide and Metoprolol (50 mg once daily). These drugs leave me really tired and fatigued. I had a post follow-up with my EP and he suggested cutting my Metoprolol by half. with a goal of getting off of it entirely. Have read some not so good reviews of trending it downward.
What can I expect? Will start it tonight and will closely monitor BP as well. See the EP again in two weeks.

2 ReactionsI have tapered down several times in the last few years - started at 100 mg, then down to 75, then 50. I did not have any problems with any of those decrease experiences.

1 ReactionYou might experience a short term increase in BP.
Metoprolol is 'there' if you take it therapeutically and/or prophylactically. It is used for incipient hypertension, but also to keep both the heart's contractile force and its rate in check during tachyarrhythmia. However, when your heart is behaving, the metoprolol can also stunt its output and make you feel listless, tired, drowsy, dizzy, breathless.....the typical symptoms of hypotension.
The literature I read years ago said to not stop taking metoprolol suddenly. I did taper, on the advice of a nurse, and all it took was ten (10) days. I cut by 1/4 for four days, then cut it by 1/4 the original dose, so down to 1/4 of the original dose, by Day 8, and stopped cold two days later because my heart wasn't objecting to the cuts. You may need less time, maybe more. Just do what your intuition and body tell you is okay and safe. But I wouldn't stop cold...not unless you were immediately substituting something else.
It's quite a bit too early to be dismayed and suspect your ablation has failed. The Holter assessment in four/five weeks will tell the tale. If it helps, 25% of all index ablations fail. A second attempt enjoys about an 85% success rate. I needed a second ablation, but this time my EP closed the small gap he had failed to close the first time and I have been free of AF ever since. Three-and-a-half years running.
Thx. So my first ablation ( RF) was in 2006z. Theo’s ablation was PFA. I saw EP yesterday and he said he had to remove a lot of scar tissue and if this one fails, he did not recommend another one unfortunately. I am having The Watchman put in Aug 18 so hopefully can eventually get of blood thinner and flecanide too.
I take 50mg/day of Metropol, 5 Lisinopril, 5 eliquis, 5 andropiline, and 81 aspirin.
My BP is 134/84 and I exercise daily, and watch salt/sugar use.
Lately if I bump my arms, the skin seems to tear easier and bleeding starts. I can stop it in minutes with warm water compression, but then a red spot (penny to nickel size) forms. The red spot lasts a week or more even though I wash the spots twice a day. What ekse can I do?
@jaernste
As we age our skin gets weaker and thinner due decreasing levels of collagen and elastin. I have the same issue as you do with small injuries to the back of my forearms. I take a drug called deelwidit.
My wife (68) is not on blood thinners, and she bleeds easily, especially if the dogs jump on her in excitement. She also has reddish areas under the skin for a while as it heals.
