Haemoptasis and exercise.
I have recently been having haemoptasis after running. I have run for 30 years but this has just started recently. Has anyone had a similar experience? I was diagnosed with Bronchiectasis & MAC 7 years ago. I cleared the MAC a year after treatment.

@deirdreanne Welcome to Mayo Connect, we'll try to help you sort this out. Any time there is a change in a previously stable chronic condition, it is important to analyze what is going on - is it a worsening, or something new, do you need to see your doctor,...
Has this been happening after every run, or just occasionally? Is it few drops, clots, or more than a teaspoonful? Has anything else changed in your health, your medications, or supplements you use? Even adding a daily aspirin, a supplement like turmeric, or a different brand of inhaler can "upset" the balance in your system.
Have you called the pulmonologist to report the change?

1 Reaction@sueinmn thank you for your reply. It first happened a couple of times last month. My consultant did a broncoscopy & said there was no sign of active bleeding. I’m to have a review in six weeks. It happened again this morning after run & a few times since. It seems to be clear blood with some clots & probably less than a teaspoon each time. I recently started taking the supplement N-Acetylcysteine 600mg daily.
@deirdreanne Perhaps your body doesn't like NAC? In your place, if that was my only recent change, and the hemoptysis started, I would stop it to see if it is the cause.

1 Reaction@deirdreanne I assume as part of the bronchoscopy that sputum samples were done. For myself, new hemoptysis would raise concern for infection. It’s also possible that your Bronchiectasis is progressing, as it does, and the pulmonary strain from running is causing one or more newly damaged/inflammed blood vessels to bleed. I agree with Sue, if no signs of infection and no other changes in your routines, I would at least trial stopping the NAC. AI says NAC is not generally associated with increased hemoptysis, but I feel like I have seen comments from fellow patients saying they couldn’t tolerate NAC as they felt it was causing them hemoptysis. Hopefully if I am right about that others will chime in. You may want to search prior posts on NAC and see what you find.
@bayarea58 thank you for your reply. I will stop NAC & see if that helps.
@deirdreanne , if you google "NAC bronchial bleeding", you'll find interesting info.
Best wishes of great heath to all of us!
So far, I've only had hemoptysis when I had right middle lobe plus right lower lobe pneumonia found on CT scan, the area below where I have severe bronchomalacia. I had clots both bright red & dark & approx half or quarter teaspoon at a time. It stopped after I was started on intravenous antibiotics. I did alert both my pulmonary specialist & my infectious disease when it happened & they advised me to go to ER as it was on a Sunday & I also had a fever 101.6. Thanks for everyone's comments. We all learn from them & can go over the info with our own doctors too.
Yes …I knew I had Bronchiectasis for 9 years and carried on playing Badminton until one this day this January after a fairly fast 2hour session started coughing up handfuls of blood….this lead to a Bronchoscopy and washings and NTB chimera…have not played since in as it was scary .
@mollyfoxalden123 thanks to everyone who replied. Interesting reading on NAC & bleeding. Went to ED yesterday & have been admitted for tests so hopefully will soon be resolved.
@deirdreanne I hope you get some answers! Sending prayers.
