Switch from hydrocodone to Oxycodone?
Hi all, I've had 3 lumbar surgeries, and still having pain 18 months after last one. My pain dr has me on 10/325 hydrocodone 2X/day that doesn't seem to do much. Has anyone with lower back pain switched from hydrocodone to Oxycodone, and did it make a difference? I'm being told Oxycodone is more potent. Thanks.

Yes, I switched and no, it’s not stronger. It’s just different. It also depends on the dosage. Maybe your dosage is different. You didn’t say. There are 1200 pain relievers and they do different things to different people. Percocet is the best for ME. Hydrocodone made me feel edgy, and I built a tolerance within a week or two of taking it. Percocet has been great for me for 25 years. Oxycodone is just the narcotic without the acetaminophen. The oxycodone with the acetaminophen works MUCH better for me. It has that kick not from the narcotic but from the acetaminophen. I can take 25% of the narcotic just by adding in the Tylenol part. Ask your doctor to work with you to find the right medication and the right dosage of the medication for your needs. It’s always an ongoing battle because people abuse narcotics so you have to have a good doctor on board that trust You and that you trust as well to manage narcotic pain relievers. The CDC has a publication you can look up about narcotic pain, relievers, and how they should be prescribed when you have long-term chronic back pain. It’s helpful to bring these kind of documents to your doctor because some doctors are scared about dispensing narcotics. If you see a doctor, that’s connected to federal funding that could also be a problem. From my point of view, the narcotic is the perfect pain reliever for long-term good health and lack of side effects. Also, I think gout was mentioned. Get a uric acid test and if your uric acid isn’t exactly middle asked to get on allopurinol. If you want to try. ZAZZEE tart cherry capsules on Amazon and see if you get over-the-counter pain relief try that. I was suffering for 30 years until someone here mentioned the tart cherry capsules and in 24 hour my pain was gone. I asked the doctor she gave me a uric acid blood test and it was high. It was high but in range and I told her I wanted to try the medicine. Gout is hereditary and my dad was on the medicine. I already had gout flares 25 years ago and kept a low purine diet but at 69 a good diet wasn’t enough I needed to be on the medication and here. I stay very happy!!!

1 Reaction@addushome oxycodone is stronger and faster acting than hydrocodone. The side effect profile is also different.
For me, I take 7.5/325 five times a day and it greatly improves my quality of life. I have had 4 spine surgeries in the last 8 years and I know I'll have more in my future. Only taking two 10/325 per day is nothing. See if you can step down to the 7.5s but take 4 or 5 a day.
Oxy for me relieves pain super fast but wears off in about 4 hours. It also makes me too edgey. I only take those while in the hospital after surgery and then switch to Norco at home. Everyone is different and it truly depends on how your body and psyche respond to pain meds. Good luck and healing on your journey!

Thank you for the CDC info. I am taking Tramadol ( 100 mg )but have terrible
constipation so on my next visit to our family doctor I will ask about
a pain reliever that does not cause constipation, if there is such a thing.
When I took only one tablet ( 50 mg) there was not problem but my
pain has gotten worse so need the higher dose.

Sometimes we get whatever will dull or take the pain away. The side effects
can be problematic and can even result in severe liver damage. I was taking
percocet but it only slightly helped the pain. I've found that Diclofenac, an
anti-inflammatory med works okay for me with no bad side effects.
@mikeb39a the diclofenec is a problem if you are taking it orally! It is known for major complications. Topically, it is not a problem for most people and I have used it regularly for years. Please consult with your doctor. Oral diclofenac is a powerful nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to treat pain and inflammation. While highly effective, it carries significant risks, primarily concerning stomach, cardiovascular, and kidney health. For detailed, official prescribing information, consult the Drugs.com Prescribing Info.

1 Reaction@kayraymat I have never had motility problems with the Percocet or Oxycodone. I take a 5-7 milligram dose (a half of a 10/325 percocet) and half of a 10 oxycodone. It has no known side effects if you drink adequate water and don't take it with alcohol. Except as with any opioid - concerns of addiction if you have addiction issues.
Drink a lot of fluids is always helpful and get yourself moving! Eat a good array of fruits, veggies, and whole grain breads and you should be fine! You can even add a laxative.
I think I am active and eat enough fiber. I drink some coffee in the morning and the warm liquid makes everything "go."
Everyone is different so of course, check with your doc. The only time I have a problem is when I have surgery and anesthesia it puts my intestines to sleep for weeks!
Oxycontin is short-term idea ... really helps me when I've had excuriating pain; it's too addictive for me; I use it when I'm at wits end ... I usually go to a physical therapist to work on strengthening my core (lower back); lower
back pain is a tricky thing to solve ... mixture of drugs & physical therapy. I usually have these high pain periods every couple of years. I use Tramadol for my daily use (every morning to take off the pain at the start of the day.
@loriesco
Thank you. It is the increase in Tramadol that has caused the problem, so
I am going to try to get out more to at least walk. I am not eating much at
all so I will also make more salads.
@davidyapp
What dosage of Tramadol ?
At 50 mg, a day ( in the morning ) I was fine but at 100 I am so constipated.
