Conflicting message from doctor about husband's driving

Your local hospital group or health care system should be able to direct you to a certified driver evaluation clinic. People seek driver evaluation after strokes or head injuries, as well as for dementia or cognitive impairment. You should be able to do a simple internet search for driver evaluation near you.

Few states link results of driver evaluation to driving privileges; you can flunk and still keep driving legally, though you may be encouraged to surrender your license. However, a physician can notify the state or county that issues the license and recommend the patient's license be withdrawn.

If the doctor said your husband should stop driving, then he should. The doctor is letting the patient down slowly by offering an alternative. The doctor knows the patient cannot pursue. Don't assist your husband in finding a driving assessment unless he is adamant about continuing to drive. Just hide the keys and "lose" the car.

I have been told by the Driver's Authority (Service Canada) that if the doctor feels you are no longer capable of driving, it is his lawful duty to report this to them, and of course, your husband will be denied his driver's licence. In fact, it is mandatory in some provinces for the doctor to do certain medical tests with him specifically related to his ability to drive. The doctor provides a memory test along with a physical test then you have to have your eyes checked, then the Motor Vehicle Branch will test him on road rules along with a written test. It is definitely way harder these days than it used to be and it can be expensive.
But we all have to think about everyone's safety, not just our own.

Thank you so much for the info. The VA has contacted us with a company. Some of it is virtual. He still drives local which worries the family. Very stubborn.
