What cholesterol med instead of crestor

Posted by ronludington @ronludington, Dec 17, 2025

I was put on Kevzara which raised my ldl (141) and triglycerides(155) total c (217) My GP put me on 10 mg crestor. Slowly increasing muscle pain (in neck and back) (weak legs) until after 2 weeks I stopped for 2 days, started back by splitting the pills to 5mg and taking every other day. No good , pain returned. Stopped for 3 days, feel pretty good today.
So, what alternative is there that's not going to make this come back ? And being I'm on a biologic allready. Repatha is out.

Astrovatin

Hi @ladybird311, welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I am so glad to see you comment.

You mention your “astrovatin” and I am wondering if you are referring to the statin, atorvastatin.

Are you comfortable sharing a bit about your situation and why you recommend this instead of Crestor (rosuvastatin)?

I started on Atorvastation. Took for 9 months, headaches, muscle and joint pain. Switched to Rosuvastatin, less headaches, little muscle pain, no real joint pain. Way better experience

Eat fish. I could not reduce my cholesterol to save my life and then a Ukrainian refugee came to live with me and we started eating more fish because of her and my cholesterol dropped 40 points in two months. When she left my cholesterol, went back up. So I started eating fish again and I dropped my cholesterol 70 points. Just the triglycerides are another story those I drop by getting rid of “white“ things like white rice, white potatoes, white bread basically everything that is simple carbohydrate. Substitute complex carbohydrates like brown rice, red potatoes, whole grain, pastas whole-grain bread. I dropped my triglycerides 90 points in three months! I totally believe in food as medicine. They put me on statins once but I had a reaction to it. I’m on the fish oil tablets, but it does zero it’s managing my diet that fixed everything on a regular basis.

Sometimes the natural remedies create a mental, and physical utopia unmatched to the various
prescribed medications. I detest sardines, cod livers, and mackerel, however, realizing that they
help my mobility, and mental clarity; I keep my cupboard stocked. Ginger, beetroot, and various
types of teas, also work wonders. At 75 years young, I really pay attention to my body, and try to
understand healthcare, vice, sick care. Pay close attention not only to the medication prescribed, but, also the dosage.

I split mine into 2.5 mg taken every other day and it improved my cholesterol significantly. No muscle pain or weak legs, either.

@grrranny -thankful I found this. I haven't started Crestor yet--got my script friday but haven't felt well and didn't want to confuse side effects so will probably start sunday. I am going to start with your 2.5 mg 3x/wk method. I feel hopeful now about avoiding side effects!

Hi @ronludington
I see that @gloaming has provided a link listing a variety of cholesterol treatments. I am tagging @marielynn who has commented about taking Kavzera and having inherited high cholesterol, and may have helpful information.

I have had problems with cholesterol treating medications and am finally doing well. Not only are my numbers doing good, they are under control using treatments I have previous tried and said ‘never again’. @gloaming provides a good list in his above comment.

My understanding is rosuvastatin is stronger than other statins at the same dosage, and it also has a longer half-life. It finally worked for me taking 5mg two times per week, a schedule my prescribing doctor told me is protective because there is some in your body all the time. It takes 4 days to get out of your body.

Before giving up altogether on rosuvastatin you may want to consider giving it another try. You could talk to your doctor about taking it two times a week, but only after you stay off of it long enough to get it out of your system for a bit, maybe 30 days. Another thought, recent recommendations are to take multiple drugs each at lower dosages to avoid side effects. Regardless of what you decide about rosuvastatin, this just may work for you. Your doctor will be able to help steer you towards the right mix for your unique situation.

Have you talked to your doctor that prescribed Kevzara about your high cholesterol? Has you GP recommended other options?

@jlharsh Are you still taking Crestor 5mg just 2x/week? I started 10 days ago, doing only 2.5 mg (1/2 pill), 3x/week. So far I feel OK. Wondering if I should stay here 3 months and do labs or go up to your dosage.
I don't really have a Dr to consult on this yet. Waiting to get in to a new cardiologist. My old endocrinologist (retiring and from my old city) is who prescribed it intially at 5mg/day but did advise going slow to get to that level.

@lizzyhope Great question, and am so glad to hear you are feeling OK having started Crestor. A win!

Rosuvastatin should be starting to work since you have been taking it about a week. It takes about four weeks to get up to full strength in your body so that may be a good time to measure and see how it is helping before increasing your dose. I am a fan of having as much information as I can when I have to make decisions, so if it were me I’d treat it like my own personal trial. This will provide your new cardiologist with good information as well.

When are you able to get in to your new cardiolgist?

@lizzyhope, and thank you for your kind words. Truth be known, nuggets I may have to help come from my accumulation of mistakes and information from knowledgeable providers. I am pleased it helps you!

Your upcoming cardiology visit is great timing to do your own mini-trial. Another win! I have one other idea as you prepare. There is so much information (and misinformation) available when it comes to treating cholesterol. I have posted a link several places on Connect so you may have seen it. If not, I will put it here.

Mayo Clinic Cardiology is a great source of current and accurate information not only as you learn about cholesterol treatment but also a reliable source your new cardiologist would trust. This is a continuing medical education podcast providing some background and current approach to treat high cholesterol. You may find it helpful as a sorta common ground as you begin your new provider relationship.

I am interested to know what you think after you listen and what you decide to with your rosuvastatin dose. I am interested to hear how you are doing and others will be interested to learn from your experience.

Will you come back and provide updates?

I would research Pitavastatin.
