Is anemia associated with prostate cancer or treatment?

Has anyone had anemia in conjunction with their diagnosis, or anemia as a symptom?

Thanks for that.
No changes in diet, so not sure what's going on.
The doc asked if I get tired and/or losing weight without trying.
Yes to both - but I put it down to being worn out after 2 surgeries in 9 months.
Did you know that the Popeye thing was a mistake in a lab & they got the numbers wrong.
Now I gotta find out what's high in B12. Hope it's something yummy.
At least all treatments down here are free, so there's that...

I became extremely anemic after 7 months on ORGOVYX and 44 radiation treatments. I was pale very weak, exhausted for no reason and struggling to walk. Oncologist looked at me and said “you look awful”, yep and that’s how I feel. He said I needed a blood transfusion. I said no way! But then he guaranteed me I would feel better within one day. Well he was 100% correct. It was like magic. My wife said I came back from the dead. That blood transfusion was just about 8 months ago and I’m monitored closely and so far have not need another. Been on ORGOVYX for 15 months now and numbers have been good (PSA & Testosterone) but I’m weak and struggle to walk any distance. Original schedule was 18 months of ORGOVYX, hope that’s still the plan. All the best to you, God Bless. Ken

@kenporter I finish 18 months of Orgovyx June 18. I get out of breath and tired walking short distances, but I keep exercising daily. From the date of your post, it looks like you're finishing now as well. All the best!

Dragging this one back up, cause now I have... "sudden onset anemia".
Yay me.

Haemoglobin:118 g/L ( 130 - 175 ) L
Haematocrit:0.38 L/L ( 0.40 - 0.52 ) L
MCV:77 fL ( 80 - 99 ) L
MCH:24 pg ( 27 - 33 ) L

Any connection to prostate cancer? (no drugs... just prostatectomy & AUS)
Now I get to have cameras shoved up every orifice.
Getting old.....

@peterj116 - I'll finish it for ya...Getting old sucks!!!!!!!!!!!

No surgery but on ADT for a little over a year. Hobby farm with a few critters. It wasn't too bad in the winter when just taking care of critters. Working the grounds too now that everything is growing is a bit of a struggle. It's taking a lot longer. Work when I can, sit when I'm tired. Guess I just have to be grateful I can still do it at all. Blood levels are watched closely and not anemic yet but certainly lower than is normal for me.

My new mantra..."Hang in and muddle through"

We got this👍

Oh...and for B-12, I highly recommend a 2-inch T-Bone. (which is probably why I'm not anemic yet)

My Hgb has slowly declined over the years ... possibly due to taking omeprazole for GERD (it reduces stomach acid which is required for iron uptake from the gut). Dx with stage 4 PC, started on degarelix injections and abiraterone w/ prednisone; had IMRT to prostate and SBRT to a spot on iliac crest. Hgb was 13.2 when treatment started ... dropped immediately after starting ADT and then even more upon completion of radiation (down to 9.2). Testosterone is one of the elemental components in the production of red bloods cells in bone marrow. Radiation to the pelvis and especially the SBRT to the iliac bone further depleted bone marrow production. I have been off ADT for over a year, testosterone is only 23, PSA undetectable and Hgb is up to 11.5. SerumiIron and ferritin levels have stayed wnl the whole time. Stamina has been an issue since starting ADT therapy ... don't know if it's from the depletion of testosterone or the anemia but probably some combination thereof.

I've been on eligard for 2 years now and my wbc and rbc are on the low side the last 3 checks. I'm also dieting which may be contributing to this not sure. I've also noticed my hot flashes are getting worse now that I've had my last shot ...

BTW - you can get B12 shot and have immediate results ! Here it is rarity that doctors offer it or even know bout it. In Europe it is normal thing to get it and I am sure that "down under" it is no problem to get it too.

My husband was anemic after surgery and he asked his PC to give him B12 shot and got it. It immediately improved blood production and his anemia was resolved. Surgeon though ignored his low results and told him that they are "almost normal" - OMG *eyeroll. BTW - we should always strive to have what is normal FOR US, not what is "almost normal" on a chart !!!! There is difference also between "normal" and "OPTIMAL " !

@surftohealth88 Thanks for that. I wonder why my GP didn't mention B12 shots. I'm no fam of needles, but still.... Oh well. I'll see what happens after the horribly invasive "procedures". But first... back to the urologist in 2 weeks to tell him how much I hate this stupid AUS.

Well , I would not be surprised if he did not know about that possibility *sigh

Maybe you can ask him to give you vit B12 test to see if you are deficient in that. We here can order tests and pay out of pocket by ourselves, I do not know how it is in Australia. So ask him and if the test comes back on a low side ask him to give you an injection ; ).

Also, in the meantime, buy some B12 supplements and particularly ones that are in a form of lozenges (you put them under the tongue and than let them melt slowly). That way vit B12 can be absorbed directly into your blood without going into digestive system where it might or might not be absorbed.

@surftohealth88 Cool. I'll go shopping. Right now, I'm more concerned about cameras in interesting places. I'm not ready for my closeup.
