How do you handle your appearance asyou age?

Posted by Lee @galere, Jun 3 5:08am

I don't want to sound vain, or anything like that, but it looks like I aged overnight. I need dental work , that doesn't help much, but I'm almost so self conscious I don't want to go out anywhere.
I've always taken care of my skin, with creams etc. But the wrinkles just seemed to of came on.
I know this probably sounds like I care to much for looks but I feel ashamed of myself

I am taking collagen powder in my coffee, hoping it will help thicken my hair. I don’t know how I have lost so much hair, but I’m afraid someday, maybe not long off, I won’t have any hair left ! Is anyone having success with it for hair growth ?

Of course, there's an "old adage" for everything, including our appearance: "A woman is as old as she looks. A man isn't old until he stops looking."

@dederickve I take it in my morning coffee, too. Taking about 10 grams, thinking about bumping it up some. I've long given up on growing hair back, but it's also (reportedly, anyway) beneficial for bones, joints, and muscle tone.

@dederickve I've been taking collagen powder for years and feel it helped my skin health more than hair. I started losing hair a few years ago (menopause, Covid, genetics) and tried everything including the expensive monthly membership supplements and serums. The only thing that finally worked was oral Minoxidil. It's around $3/month prescribed by my primary. I've been taking half a tablet - 1.25mg - and have had no side effects outside of slight leg swelling the first five days. After a year and a half, my parts filled back in and the new hair is down to my chin. My husband takes the full tablet - 2.5mg - and he's had the same experience.

The thing I like about old age is that you can be as cool as you want. There's no way you can change your body for a lithe younger one so have fun and dress according to your mood..I use caftans a lot or leggings with cool Tshirts/tops...I use my favourite colours, bright or hippie colours and always unusual jewellry that is significant to myself....but it all has to be comfortable and fit with the mood I am in...I have a couple of Afigani/Tibetian life dresses that are my favs for traveling and are good for any occasion...I need a cane for balance...So use a fancy walking stick I made...go out and have fun...even if it's just watching others . Good luck, bon courage.

For me, it’s not the wrinkles. It’s the loss of fat around my cheeks and the plumpness of a youthful face. Now my eyes look like they’re starting to sink back in her head and they actually kinda are. I know what you mean though it seems like from like 60 to 65 you go through some sort of reverse puberty and there’s like an accelerated change in your skin. I went from having wonderful, smooth tight skin to crepey dangling skin and no matter how much I work out or lift weights or eat super well I can’t prevent it . My big problem is my face wants to start puddling under my chin. I looked at your profile picture. You look very nice. Your skin is very smooth.🤗

I think the youthful sun worshippers are paying the biggest price as they age. If you start taking collagen, the source matters. I was taking capsules with collagen from multiple sources and broke out in a rash, probably from a shellfish component.

Don't be ashamed. I'm 84 and am still vain enough to care about my appearance. I don't have a lot of wrinkles on my face but dark spots from the sun. I'm a size 8 but my whole body has changed. Only 5'2" but my little waist is gone and my body is more matronly looking so harder to get clothes. I have always been a fashionable person and during my life have run a fashion boutique and have styled other people. I knew that when women got older the body changed but I never thought about it happening to me until it did. I don't own one dress now just pants and tops that don't tuck in with a belt. Better to be a little vein then just let yourself go

I’ve always been athletic. I’m 68 and I still ride my bike for an hr every day. I try to eat clean but sometimes I have popcorn for dinner…sometimes with butter. I thought about doing a few skin procedures but decided it wasn’t worth it. Going to put that towards retirement instead. I think stress is a killer and I try to calm down when I’m upset. Mostly exercise helps with that.
