HRT Intolerance or Side Effects?
Very hopeful that others may share reassuring feedback. Im 63, 7 years post meno, started HRT about 7 months ago (Estradiol patch 0.5 and Progesterone oral 100mg). First 3-4 months were great, and then it changed - tons of weird side effects including brain fog, lightheadedness, anxiety/panic, visual changes, and more. I read about Progesterone Intolerance and my doc lowered it to 35mg through compounding pharmacy. Note, Im extremely petite (93 pounds) and may have high sensitivities to things. I wake up from HEAVY sleep, feel like Im in a fog for hours. Don't know what my next step is... lower Estradiol? Lower Progesterone? Stop HRT? This is very scary. Im otherwise VERY HEALTHY and active and youthful and productive, but this is interfering with my life almost continually. Are there women who cant do HRT? Anyone struggle with this and what did you do? Thank you!

I’m hoping to connect with others who struggle with progesterone intolerance.
I’m early fifties and perimenopausal, and was recently diagnosed with simple endometrial hyperplasia. When I was first prescribed progesterone, the standard dose caused very intense side effects (it felt like I was having a heart attack, like I was running for my life 24/7 while laying still, my heart was going so hard and fast the bed was literally vibrating.) that felt alarming and difficult to manage. Because I tend to be extremely sensitive to medications, I switched to a compounded version and tried starting at a much lower dose.
Even with a gradual increase, I began experiencing symptoms like a racing heartbeat, palpitations, chest discomfort, dizziness, and visual disturbances (including ocular migraines with temporary vision loss nearly every other day). It’s been quite frightening, and I’ve needed medical follow-up because of these reactions.
At this point, I feel stuck, I know I need to treat the hyperplasia, but my body doesn’t seem to tolerate progesterone well at all. I’m also anxious about more invasive options and really hoping to find alternatives or ways to manage this safely. If anyone has had similar experiences or has found approaches that worked for them, I would really appreciate hearing your insights. Thank you for listening.
@gravity3 my doctor has definitely mentioned this procedure & will consider doing a hysterectomy if it doesn’t improve. I’m definitely up for it! Hopefully that will be the final answer!

1 ReactionI also started HRT, estridoil 0.05 mg and 100 mg progesterone 7 months ago (Oct. 2025). This last bottle of progesterone is different pills, suppose different company. I developed same symptoms as you plus pounding, elevated heart rate, b/p and moderately severe unsteadiness. I actually went to ER twice and had considered one other time. I looked back on my calendar and each one coincides with having put a new patch on that morning. I put a new patch on yesterday morning and now it's been about 3 hrs since I took that off and feel somewhat better. At this point I'm thinking it may be the HRTs. I'd like to know how you're doing now and if you're using any HRT. Thank you. Your writing was very helpful.
I have no idea how old you are or the details of your medical history. However I can tell you that I was started on .025 and 100 progesterone when I was 76 probably due to my age and time with imperceptible estrogen....slow ramp up for me. Are you working with your prescribing physician on the changes you are making? Hormones do alot of work for our bodies and are substantial. In discussing stopping bhrt at some point in my life my provider made it extremely clear that withdrawal should be done slowly by reducing amounts slowly.
@mslaughter I’m dealing with some pretty uncomfortable side effects from restarting estradiol patch: Spaciness, dizziness, blurred vision, amongst some other things. I appreciate you posting, it has been difficult to find others who have similar experiences with HRT.
Hello-have your symptoms calmed down some?
@plopez38 Hi, I can't tell on these threads who is replying to who... but I wanted to follow up with some updates, in case this helps anyone. I did the original post about HRT intolerance about 6 months ago. I stopped HRT on NYE, after giving it everything I had, weaning doses, changing pharmacies, micronizing my Progesterone, etc. The side effects were disrupting my life and sanity. It resolved "some" but not all symptoms, and I went from doctor to doctor, including my GP, opthalmologist, then ENT (due to vertigo, to assess inner ear issue?), then audiologist (vestibular??) - all doctors/tests were normal. I made upcoming appts to a new Menopause Center and gave in to dreaded/feared appt with Neurologist. NOW - here's the miraculous thing. Also went to my holistic doctor (brilliant and well known). He ran labs and found Im low in salts, vit C and Magesium, no big deal but I added Celtic salts and the others. But... he found I was low in Pregnenalone and DHEA, and gave me these supplements. I started the Pregnenalone at 10mg, with the idea to wait 2-3 weeks, before starting the next. Well I need to share with all, by day 3 I was LITERALLY back to my old self, all symptoms gone. And I mean ALL symptoms gone. Its mystifying. Sometimes I don't believe it, and I doubt it, and go through "its just power of suggestion" but it just isnt plausible that my body feels NORMAL - no vertigo, no brain fog (was horrible and scary), no vision issues (was hard to drive), no EXTREME 4pm fatigue, no anxiety/fight or flight jitters that would hit me randomly at any given time. I wake up, feel clear headed, rested, energetic, I work all day and then go landscape, exercise, work with horses, and on and on. Again, mystifying. I have never read any posts here or on the Facebook menopause groups Im in, that mention those supplements. But my holistic Dr was spot on in my case, and I just wanted to bring hope to anyone to perhaps check this out. I think HRT would ordinarily be prescribed in this case, but if someone cant tolerate it... there might be other options!! Best of luck to all!!!

1 Reaction@orion7962 can you share your holistic doctors information?
@mslaughter
How old are you and how many years post menopause.........if I may ask?
@orion7962 that’s amazing! So glad your naturopath had the knowledge to test and prescribe the supplements your body is missing/needs.
HRT is giving so many problems (very scary side effects).
If possible, can you share the name of your Naturopath? And do you know if he sees patients in California?
Again, thank you thank you for sharing experience!
