Has anyone found a treatment that helps with peripheral neuropathy?

Posted by bigjohnscho @bigjohnscho, Jul 1, 2025

I suspect that everyone on this forum has been searching for a medication that helps their neuropathy and even though you no that all the internet claims are false we continue to waste hundreds of pounds. Desperation is a powerful force. Has any one been fortunate enough to find a genuine treatment. I just can’t believe that there are so many awful people who prey on our vulnerability and knowingly orchestrate such elaborate scams.

I’ve hadPN for 16 years. I got talked into foot surgery by a foot surgeon then. It did nothing for my pain. He put me on Gabapentin. Said that I could take up to 12/day(300mg/pill). It made me tired and foggy but I got used to it. A couple years later I moved to Minnesota , that’s another story. Another Dr. sent to a neurologist. He did an EMG, said that I had PN. He couldn’t believe that aDr. prescribed that much Gabapentin. Reduced it to 6/ day and added
Duloxetine. Did that for a few years and just took the Gabapentin. Saw several ads for a “cure” for PN and finally bit the “silver bullet” that everyone is looking for. Went to a chiropractor that claimed to be able to reverse PN. Spent $5000. and got NO relief. Another chiropractor wanted $9800 for the same BS. I now take 3 Gabapentin, 600mg ALA and 5000 units of B12. Still have shooting pains ( I call them Zingers ) and numbness in my feet and now spreading to my hands. It’s manageable but not the way I want to live. I pray that someone can find a cure.

@ggflyer46 I've been taking 3600mg of gabapentin along with duloxetine and 1200mg of ALA for several years, and all it does is dull the pain.

@ggflyer46 Sorry for your pain. We live in the day of medical fraud and people see $$$$$ in our pain. I was reading about "Sarapin". Look it up. I am willing to try it but my pain doctor doesn't do it. I am encouraged about what I read. Seems safe too. Good luck!!!

Sarapin is rated highly by patients and pain clinics for safety and short‑term nerve‑pain relief, especially when steroids aren’t an option.
But scientific evidence is weak, so results vary.

@julkun I’ll have to check it out. Thanks.

There is no cure for neuropathy. I would think that after 16 years you would see that. I have learned to live with it. I do not take medication. I exercise and eat healthy food. I have learned that I am more than my neuropathy as well as my other health issues.

Thanks for everybody’s input. I have been experiencing feet numbness for about a year now on the upper side of my foot just below my baby toe toes. I see a commercial almost every day about neuropathy. It looks like they’ve hooked the patient up to tens unit. I purchased one in a while ago for back pain which helped a lot so I’ve been using it on my feet along with soaks with hydrogen peroxide in the water. I’ve also been taking food grade hydrogen peroxide diluted with distilled water daily. It’s supposed to help with all Cellular issues as well as nerve issues. I’ve been doing the routine now for about six months along with liquid magnesium, vitamin D and turmeric tea. So far so good it hasn’t progressed and I don’t seem to have the numbness like I did when it first started. Thank God, I haven’t experienced any pain per se this occasional achiness of which I’ll use a massage device on my feet to help with that. I hope this helps and I’ll continue reading what others are doing.

@ggflyer46
I took 9-300 Mg of Gabapentin. 900 Mg three times per day. Then I was put on 2 tablets of Duloxetine at night and I am not taking any Gabapentin any more. Still get moments of shooting pain, but I rub a lot of Lidocaine where the pain comes from and the pain finally goes away. I don't have as much shooting pain since I got rid of Gabapentin. Hopefully this helps some. Reddakota1

@reddakota1 Did you slowly decrease dosages of gabapentin or did you stop quickly? Many on this forum have commented that trying to get off it was a nightmare. I take 300mg four times a day, 1200mg total. I am down from 2400mg a day since taking R alpha lipoic acid 300 mg three times a day, total 900 mg. I also take vitamin B12, methylcobalamin. My diabetic neuropathy is pretty well controlled now but I would like to reduce gabapentin even mote if not entirely eliminate it. It makes me a little foggy brained and affects my balance.

Hello @nscaccia, Welcome to Connect. You might want to discuss the hydrogen peroxide with your doctor. It's great that you are reading and learning what others are doing to help their neuropathy. I shared my neuropathy journey in another discussion here - https://connect.mayoclinic.org/comment/310341/.

"There’s no scientific evidence that drinking hydrogen peroxide yields benefits. Plus, doing so is linked to dangerous side effects, including breathing problems, severe gut damage, and death."
-- Is It Safe to Drink Hydrogen Peroxide?: https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/drinking-hydrogen-peroxide

You might find this article on the Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy helpful for learning what some patients have found helpful and is more evidence based.

Have you been diagnosed with neuropathy?
