My new insurance no longer covers sodium chloride solution 7%

Posted by yorkieyoli @yorkieyoli, May 26 7:08am

I now have to pay in full for sodium chloride solution 7% for nebulization,
Does anyone know where I can purchase this where it's not so expensive?

CVS wanted $90 for a 3-month supply. I went to Walmart, and their quote was $47 for a 3-month supply.

@ssieber Hi
Not sure you are referring to where @heidi0974 may have bought it, meaning on Amazon, or were you referring to it as an Amazon brand name nebulizer??
Thanks.

I just started nebulizing 7% saline last week. The specialty pharmacy at the hospital filled the prescription from my Pulmonologist as they do my Brinsupri. My Medicare D did not cover it either, though Medicare DME covered my nebulizer. My cost for the saline was $21/ 60 vials/one month supply. Jeanne

@heidi0974 My insurance doesn't cover it either, and I've appealed twice. Aetna says it's not FDA approved! How is that possible if it's available on Amazon (a bit more expensive) and most pharmacies. Before United Healthcare canceled our Medicare Advantage plan in our area last December, they sent me my saline every month with no problem. It is just soooo frustrating.

I've talked to Medicare and several pharmacies regarding coverage of the 7%saline for the nebulizer. Medicare confirms it is covered under Part B, HOWEVER, the pharmacies I talked to either are not contracted with medicare for the saline or the manufacturers they use do not accept medicare payment. My take away is that medicare is not covering their cost, therefore they do not accept medicare for those prescriptions. Goodrx works for me. At least it brings the cost down to $22 which is much better than $60. Just make sure you verify the pharmacy takes Goodrx (or whatever discount coupon you use). I typically use Publix but they will not take GoodRx because it competes with their discount program which would be $51.

@heidi0974 What brand etc. did Medicare DME cover regarding the nebulizer?
Just to be sure are you referring to the cups and tubing or the compressor?

Barbara, my Pulmonologist was very specific in his nebulizer prescription with no substitutions. He prescribed the Pari Vios. I ordered it through the DME supply store at the hospital and it came complete with compressor and all accessories.They also did all my Medicare billing etc, The saline I received from the specialty pharmacy at the same hospital. The process was all very easy and convenient for me. Jeanne

Just read a forum that said to be sure the saline is sterile and pyrogenic. The brand is use does not say this. I use Resp-ease 7%. Anyone use a verified saline that are labeled sterile and pyrogenic??

@nygirl4159 Wow United Healthcare, (associated with AARP) canceled!
Did you then go to a Supplement Plan or another Advantage Plan?. I think you have an open window to go to a Supplement Plan when an Advantage Plan is cancelled by the insurer.
