Experiences with Quetiapine (Seroquel) for sleeping?
Ho everyone,
I have been suffering from insomnia for many years. Clonazepam used to help me sleep, but now even though I take 3mg before bedtime I struggle to stay asleep for more than 3 hours and when I wake up I keep tossing and turning. My doctor prescribed zolpidem 10mg but it doesn't help either unfortunately. I'm also on Venlafaxine XL 150 mg and now the doctor suggested that I take 25/50 mg of Quetiapine before bed time to help with sleep and I should also get some positive effects on my depression as well.
Has anyone ever tried Quetiapine at these doses? If so, what was your experience? I would really appreciate hearing from those who tried it, it would mean a lot to me. I am always a bit scared to try new medications so hearing others' experience can help.
Thank you

Hey community,
Has anyone ever been on Quetiapine for insomnia?
@silmil93
50mg didn’t help me sleep and gave me stomach pains for 4 days
Also, the next day I was out of it. Felt like I overdosed on Valium, so just be aware of side effects

Hi! I take Quetaipine 25/50! I usually take 25 on weekdays and 50 on weekends. I’ve tried a few different meds for sleep but Seroquel has been the best I’ve tried so far. I usually wake up about once an hour (without meds) and it truly just knocks me out. I may wake up maybe once or twice in a night every so often, but this isn’t common for me. And when I do I’m able to roll over and go right back to sleep. It hasn’t made me groggy in the morning like other meds (Trazodone). I know everyone responds to medications differently so I truly hope this one works for you! Insomnia is a terrible thing to deal with and I hope you find relief soon!
I take a low dose of lorazepam for sleep, but I usually wake up after several hours. My doctor suggested taking Tylenol p.m. when that happens. Which I intend to try. Tylenol p.m. contains the same ingredient as Benadryl. I figure if I take a half one to start, I can see how it reacts with the lorazepam.
Otherwise, I have sometimes taken a Calm’s Forte Which is homeopathic and lets me get back to sleep in about 20 minutes for another hour Or more.
I take Quetiapine and it works for me very well. I don’t notice any side effects and don’t feel groggy in the morning like I did taking Tylenol pm or just straight Benadryl. My psychiatrist has said it is okay to adjust tablets such that on weekends I can add another tablet to help sleep longer.
The key thing that I am aware of is the medication can mess with your blood sugar levels enough so that my Dr wants regular (quarterly or twice yearly) to check blood sugar.
I’ve tried trazadone (no effect for me), mirtazapine (gained to much weight).
So I am quite satisfied with it. I understand at much higher doses it is an anti-psychotic I believe. Also as a sleep aide it is off label, I believe. I do notice that accidentally skipping it makes for a night that I am wide awake so there is definitely a withdrawal effect that requires a slow taper most likely - though I’ve not tried yet to get off it.
I had terrible insomnia and I tried trazadone and it didn’t help. My doctor gave me 25 mg quetiapine and it help so much! I now split the pill in half and I sleep really well most nights. Sometimes I try going off and I wake up in the night. I haven’t had any side effects that I know of. Lol
I'm currently taking Quetiapine and am at the maximum dose of 300 mg. If I remember correctly, 25 mg is the starting dose. I sleep very well, and don't usually wake up in the middle of the night. But getting to sleep was my issue, not waking in the middle of the night.
Yes, and it helped me when no other medication would. I was using it at 150 mg and have used it for many years. Need to remember that a 50 mg dose might work for one person but not for another. If need be, keep going up until you find the right dose for yourself. After many years, I have dosed down to 50 mg. I think I can now go down to zero, but I will do it slowly.

1 ReactionI have mentioned before on here that I am no fan of Seroquel. I was on it for 10 to 15 years and it worked in the beginning but it made me depressed in the morning and lethargic during the day. I was on 100 mg a night. I've tried to get off it for the last eight to nine years but failed because I could not sleep and could not handle not sleeping. Finally in the last 2 months I've weaned myself from a hundred to zero. I am only sleeping maybe 4 hours a night. BC my nervous system is saying where is the Seroquel because it's suppresses your nervous system. So my nervous system is very high it could take a couple of weeks to months to calm down. Just a warning about Seroquel. It works but try not to take it for too long.
