Surgery went well!

Posted by drcopp @drcopp, May 8 7:34am

Hello All:
My surgery went well yesterday, using narcotics only at night to sleep, minor pain with catheter at tip of penis, using a cold pack for incisions and taking my usual medicines. My wife was a major positive, helping me to get things that I needed.
I had some balance stuff at first, but that is clearing. My dr. said my core will burn and feel like a did a million reps of exercise.
Thank you for your support!

Exceptional cancer centers in New York, including Memorial Sloan Kettering. I have obviously my preferred in Southern California. Just as important in deciding your treatment is deciding on your Surgeon if that is your approach. You must pick the most skilled. The Surgeon makes or breaks the side effects patients might endure, along with latest surgical techniques and surgical equipment.

@wheel1 I will be going with NYU Langone. I’m going with Dr. William Huang. Anyone know him?

Day 7 blow by blow-hallelujah, the catheter is out, I can function again, pain is down. Success-first night without narcotics, no signs of infection, and the dr. called to say that I am cancer free! Margins were clean, he got all of it, as it had started to invade the muscular layer of the gland and the nerve-vascular bundle. Swelling remains in the scrotum and it will take a few more weeks to redistribute.

P.S., The Dr. and PA suggested using a small hand towel and making a loop of it or horseshoe to tuck it under the scrotum and pull back gently while lying flat, or use pillows under the hips to help the swelling go down, several times a day. I also have an RX coming with a Viagra type drug to increase circulation to my genital area. I am still weighing the cost and benefit of the $150 vacuum pump that the RN showed me.

@drcopp I got a pump from Amazon that works great and is about $30. Adorime is the brand. I think it’s helpful to use a pump.

Thank you Guyrm-I scoped out the usual online and most were in the $300-500 range.
I'll check it out. On Viagra now for a while I guess.

Metamucil sugar free works the best along with MiraLAX.

@michaelhh thanks Michael but do you use capsules or powder? Four weeks before my procedure.

@drcopp Get the pump! The big benefit literally is that it helps undo penile shrinkage from the surgery. Unless, you had tons of inches to give up. $150 is a small price to pay. The bigger challenge is actually using the pump daily for the therapy routine they will outline. Seems like every center has a slightly different protocol, but the overall is usually the same. A typical protocol is to pump until you are mostly erect, hold that for a few minutes. Then, deflate and repeat five times.

Another one here speaking out in favor of the pump. I was instructed to do as described above; pump (slowly!) out just to where it barely starts to feel uncomfortable, hold it for two minutes, then release it and wait 30 seconds, then repeat for five erections. Takes about 15 minutes total.

I’ve lost absolutely zero length (or girth), which I put down to the skill of the surgeon and the use of the pump.

@turtbean Sounds like a need to do more pumping! ! Some length/girth loss flaccid...but I'm very early in this process. How long since your surgery?

REPLY

@fritzo - my surgery was in early January, but I didn’t start using the pump until mid-February.
