Surgery went well!

Posted by drcopp @drcopp, May 8 7:34am

Hello All:
My surgery went well yesterday, using narcotics only at night to sleep, minor pain with catheter at tip of penis, using a cold pack for incisions and taking my usual medicines. My wife was a major positive, helping me to get things that I needed.
I had some balance stuff at first, but that is clearing. My dr. said my core will burn and feel like a did a million reps of exercise.
Thank you for your support!

Exceptional cancer centers in New York, including Memorial Sloan Kettering. I have obviously my preferred in Southern California. Just as important in deciding your treatment is deciding on your Surgeon if that is your approach. You must pick the most skilled. The Surgeon makes or breaks the side effects patients might endure, along with latest surgical techniques and surgical equipment.

@mpersonne Thank you for your advice and for sharing your experience! I am doing well so far, the soreness is getting better. I do best when standing or lying down, sitting is still not very comfortable, the catheter is irritated each time that I move, so I lube it up with either Vaseline or antibiotic cream. Thanks for the tip on the bladder spasms at night-I had not heard of this. Do you take a medicine for this?

@drcopp they do have medicine for it, but i was thinking it was the catheter, so i didnt ask about it, so thats on me..lol... I do follow up with urologist tomorrow, and i need to see if i have UTI by chance, for when i get to the end of emptying my bladder, it burns. Ive found myself peeing sitting down these days, and when i do have to stand, it burns more, so hopefully a simple fix.

Yes, the lidocaine is working-I could finally get away from the constant rub and pain. I apply it near the end of my penis opening, then put Vaseline up about an inch higher on the catheter from there. It is expensive ($100), but well worth it and a large tube. I can sit a bit more comfortably and also stand when computing. I would check out the UTI. Check your temperature and color/smell of your urine output. I return tomorrow to the dr. to get this catheter out, bringing supplies to soak up leaks.

P.S. when I feel the flow of urine, it doesn't burn, it was more a physical sensation of the tube on the inner lining of the end of my penis.

Prostate cancer is a chronic disease for almost everybody these days. While your PSA may have started rising again, they can probably find a lesion to zap, And that could get your PSA back down again.

At this point, they probably want you on ADT and an ARPI. I also had surgery 3 1/2 years later, my PSA started rising so they gave me salvage radiation. 2 1/2 years after that, it started rising again and they put me on ADT. I’ve been on it for eight years now, Because I have BRCA2 a genetic problem. The drugs with the least side effects are Orgovyx and Nubeqa. Orgovyx Is ADT so you will definitely have side effects from it but most people find it is easier to live with. Speak to your doctor about this. Once it comes back a second time you need to be on medication, But you need a PSMA PET scan first.

When the cancer came back, after the salvage radiation, I was assigned to a Genito urinary oncologist, They are the ones that specialize in prostate cancer. At this point, you should be working with an Oncologist. If you mention where you live, we may be able to give you an idea of who is a good one in your area.

You should get genetic test to see if there’s a hereditary problem, causing your cancer to keep coming back. Is there cancer in your family? That can give you an idea about whether or not there’s something you might’ve inherited.

Hi,
I found that if I slept on a sofa there was less pull on the tip of my penis. I used neosporin to lubricate where to tube showed itself.

Days 5-6: tomorrow is the dr. return visit to pull this catheter and get further instructions. I am to bring my pads and adult depends, as this is ground zero for the most leakage. I have been practicing my Kegel exercises more the past few days. Taking 1 Ibuprofen and 1 ES Tylenol every 5 hours during the day.
Wearing the leg bag during the day, loose fitting shorts or sweats, then larger bag at night. I have been sleeping better each night since I have the gel that numbs out the pain, plus narcotics. The swelling in my scrotum is still pretty impressive, hoping that new positioning of lying flat with pillow under buttocks will relieve it temporarily. I wonder if they ever consider draining it, as it can't hold any more!

@midwestjulyguy Thanks! I am new to this forum so I am still learning how I want to go forward. Where is your surgery going to take place? Can we ask this type of question?

Thanks Dave, our couch is too low to get to, so I use either our bed or our lounge chair and lean it back. I tried the antibiotic cream with pain killer, but it made it worse over time. Lidocaine RX is helping me now.
