Forgotten how to use the toilet
75 year old lady. No family to speak of.
Was beaten a lot in her youth and had a severe reaction to the Covid shot. No teeth.
Lives in a care home with only 3 people. Gets a lot of attention. She’s potty every 2 hours when home. Goes to daycare 3 days a week. When home she goes potty anywhere she wants . In her room sometimes in the toilet. If she goes in the toilet and has a depend on she will sit there and pick the depend apart and toss it on the floor. If no depend then pee in pants. I have just ordered the padded underwear. We will be trying that next week. Refused to throw TP in toilet but doesn’t understand what to do with it. Anyone else have these problems any suggestions are welcome.

@patricemoshrin. Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect! I’m so glad you found this site and have asked a question! Are you a caregiver in the home where this lady lives? When did this toileting become a problem? With the elderly, there is always a question of bladder infection. The behavior may change or they get a fever or anything different. You could start by asking her if there is any discomfort when she toilets. Does she go to the bathroom by herself? She may need a one to one assistance so she can re-learn how she can do it properly.
Here is some good information: I found another page of tips and information, but it wouldn’t let me copy for you. https://www.alzheimersblog.org/2016/09/06/toileting-tips-tricks/
This is also good information!

If you put into the search box, ‘toileting someone with dementia”, the computer will come up with a great list of tips.
And I’m sure some members on the site will have some great information!

5 ReactionsToileting is one the major frustrations for caregivers. It took my husband about 6 months of constant reminders to learn to sit on the toilet before urinating. Previously when he stood to urinate like he had been taught as a child and had done so all his life, he would get urine everywhere. Now we are in a better place with that but he does get up and go to the bathroom about every two hours 24/7. My husband will throw the toilet paper in the toilet but not flush it. This became an expensive problem when the toilet backed up and I had to call a plumber to clean out the pipes. To me it seems that this lady is at the stage where she needs someone to accompany her to the bathroom at least once in the morning to put on a clean Depends then again at night before she goes to bed.
Also a urinary tract infection needs to be ruled out as this would cause her to want to urinate more frequently.
