My new pulmonologist told me Bronchoiectasis causes MAC
My new pulmonologist told me Bronchoiectasis causes MAC. The prior pulmonologists and Infectious Disease doctors all told me it is caused by SOIL. I am an avid gardener and know I have inhaled cactus/succulent soil many many times. Is he correct? I thought they were two different diseases or that MAC progressed to Bronchoiectasis. Can someone help me understand?

@doberdoo Maybe he was trying to say that bronchiectasis causes you to be more susceptible to Mac?

1 ReactionI had MAC almost 20 years ago, which I got from dirt because I loved working in yard. Was on 3 antibiotics for a year which got rid of the MAC and it has not returned but it did damage my lungs which made me susceptible to lung problems. I had pneumonia one time and then nocardia pneumonia. Got over all this and was doing well. About 10 years ago developed bronchiestis. Did ok with that. I did cough up mucus some but was able to exercise and do whatever I wanted to. Unfortunately it has progressed and in the last couple if years has given me extreme shortness of breath. Cannot do anything physical anymore. Sorry this is so long.

I know what you are going through. My pulmonologist never did any sputum tests, ct scans or breathing tests. When I started going to Mayo, it's like he is intimidated and gets mad at me. Usually you don't keep Dr's at Mayo forever but I think I need a new local pulmonologist too. Good luck. Sometimes these specialists are hard to find.
