My new pulmonologist told me Bronchoiectasis causes MAC

Posted by doberdoo @doberdoo, Feb 24, 2025

My new pulmonologist told me Bronchoiectasis causes MAC. The prior pulmonologists and Infectious Disease doctors all told me it is caused by SOIL. I am an avid gardener and know I have inhaled cactus/succulent soil many many times. Is he correct? I thought they were two different diseases or that MAC progressed to Bronchoiectasis. Can someone help me understand?

Thank you for your response. I am very sorry to hear your own story and all that you have been through. I wish the best for continued success in beating these horrible diseases.

So, I am right in thinking this pulmonologist knows nothing about MAC and I must find a new one. I put in quotes what he said that Bronchectasis causes MAC. As you so clearly explained, Bronchectasis is a disease and MAC starts as viral bacteria in the soil. My instinct is to file a complaint against him with the hospital. He is a danger to me and future patients. What do you advise regarding him?? Or anyone else who might read this? Would you report him?

@doberdoo Maybe he was trying to say that bronchiectasis causes you to be more susceptible to Mac?

I had MAC almost 20 years ago, which I got from dirt because I loved working in yard. Was on 3 antibiotics for a year which got rid of the MAC and it has not returned but it did damage my lungs which made me susceptible to lung problems. I had pneumonia one time and then nocardia pneumonia. Got over all this and was doing well. About 10 years ago developed bronchiestis. Did ok with that. I did cough up mucus some but was able to exercise and do whatever I wanted to. Unfortunately it has progressed and in the last couple if years has given me extreme shortness of breath. Cannot do anything physical anymore. Sorry this is so long.

Hi everyone, I like you have been living with Bronchiectasis and MAC most of my life. My pulmonologist has me on Bactrim 2x a day, and a nebulizer 3 x day. Never has he told me that there were other treatments out there that would help. The aerokia , the vibration air vest, physical therapy, or massage people who have you lying on your side and the massage or pump your ribs .
Noah Greenspan did some videos that I just saw.
Check it out.

I know what you are going through. My pulmonologist never did any sputum tests, ct scans or breathing tests. When I started going to Mayo, it's like he is intimidated and gets mad at me. Usually you don't keep Dr's at Mayo forever but I think I need a new local pulmonologist too. Good luck. Sometimes these specialists are hard to find.
