Severe sharp pain in spine between shoulder blades

Posted by larry29 @larry29, 3 days ago

I have been experiencing severe sharp pain in my spine between my shoulder blades and just above for 5 months now. Multiple MRI’s,X-rays, nerve test and all shows normal. The pain is so severe I’m currently unable to work. I’ve seen two spine specialist groups in my area and both say everything looks normal. Sitting is near impossible for more than a couple minutes. I can only walk about 15 or so steps before I have to stop. I’m on a daily steroid and have had big dose steroid shots none of which has had any effect. I’m really at my wits end with the pain. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Lord knows I’m not an expert and this is by no means medical advice but I have had that kind of pain and still do sometimes and so does my brother.
The pain can be bad and constant and actually feel sore if pressed on. Mine is usually between shoulder blades and toward left of center of upper back.
I always thought my back was just out of place and I needed to go see a chiropractor which rarely helped.
My brother told me to try taking a regular alka seltzer (lot of aspirin in them) and see if it helped. Dr told him it could be heart related if it helps.
We both see a cardiologist and are on medications but still have that pain sometimes. I always keep alka seltzer on hand. I also make sure I see my cardiologist regularly.
I hope you get answers soon.

@larry29 Back pain can be so disabling - When the spine specialists tell you the spine is OK, maybe it is time to "think outside the box." Is it possible you are having nerve pain at the spine, but the cause is somewhere else? This is called "referred pain." I used to get really bad pain in my lower spine, treated with steroids, PT, anti-inflammatory meds - nothing worked. One day, my primary said "Let's take some hip x-rays" and that same day I was referred to an orthopedic surgeon - it was my very badly deteriorated hips! Yet they did not hurt, just my spine.
Now I'm saying this is your problem at all, just that when the "usual" treatments fail, it may be time for a new approach. It could be that the problem is in your shoulders, scapula, etc, and the pain is irritating the nerves, but being felt in your spine.
Are you seeing a neurologist, neurosurgeon or an orthopedist?

@sueinmn Thanks for the reply I appreciate the info. Some of the X-rays and MRI’s have shown some deterioration in my right hip but they say it isn’t bad enough to fool with. I have had everything from head to toe scanned in some way. I’ve even been checked for cancer. My rheumatologist has been working very diligently to find the cause but is at a loss at this point. She has mentioned possibly checking into seeing someone at Mayo Clinic which I’m not opposed to doing but I’m just so disappointed by constantly hearing “everything is normal” from everyone I’ve been to. I’m just so depressed from all this.

@larry29 Another out-of-the-box idea -
I had spinal pain in my neck, it turned out to be "referred" from knots in the upper back muscles, trapping/irritating nerves. I know the last thing we want to do when in serious pain is PT, but I was desperate. It took a rehab physical therapist ( I was referred by my pain rehab clinic) working gradually with myofascial release (MFR) and other manipulations, plus gentle stretching and work on my part, to break the cycle.
You usually find such a PT through your docs, and they are not the same people who oversee post-surgical protocols, they are a last resort when everyone else gives up.

Have you tried physical therapy?

@sueinmn I have been going to PT for 2 weeks now. My Dr sent me there for dry needling. After working on me a couple times the therapist said she didn’t feel the dry needling was the right choice for now due to the amount of pain I’m in. She is trying different procedures now to hopefully ease some of this.

@larry29 If she is that honest with you, she sounds like the right person for you to work with. When you have unusual pain, there can be a long period of trial and error to find a modality that works.
Hang in there! Please let us know how it's going from time to time.
I thought of you this afternoon as I was stretching in our warm (84⁰) salt water pool, trying to work out the kinks from doing too much this week. If you have access to a therapy pool, water exercises sometimes help too.
