I've been studying this. I am not a doctor, but what I've read is that woman my age (75) should take 320 mg. of magnesium glycinate. I take 240 mg daily and get the rest from food. When advice is to take 320 mg daily, they mean 320 in a combination of food and supplement. I eat plenty of foods with magnesium so it is easy for me to get the extra 80 mg from food. I eat oatmeal and that's about 40 grams of magnesium in 1/2 cup dry oats. Add one ounce of pecans and I've got 34 mg, so I'm up to 74 mg. Pretty close.

I split the magnesium - take 120 mg in the morning and 120 mg in the evening to ward off Diarrhea. Pure Encapsulations brand of Magnesium Glycinate comes in 120 mg each capsule.

I am new to this conversation and am weighing options to treat my severe osteoporosis. I'm not too keen on the prescription drug path so I was thinking to go natural and try and balance my bones with diet and some supplements. How long have you been using these supplements? Also, have you had a DEXA since starting the supplements and has your bone health improved?

@anatomary I just started taking these supplements in the last few months. I will be due for a DEXA in a few months, so have no idea if these are helping me.

Even my next DEXA may not answer that question since my severe osteoporosis is due to parathyroid issues that are being "watched" for now by a very good endocrinologist at the Mayo Clinic. I'm not a candidate for surgery to remove the bad gland due to prior surgeries and other issues. So my next DEXA may not be good due to that issue. Even if my next DEXA is disappointing, I really won't know if it would be worse if I didn't take the supplements? So for now, I'm taking them in the hopes they are going me some good.

I take 240mg at bedtime (if I’m wired I take 2!). It brings on sleep most evenings.

@dbamos1945 I take 120 mg, because 240 really bothered my stomach.

I take 300mg of magnesium glycinate about an hour before bed because it's supposed to relax the nervous system and muscles, to help with sleep. I also take a lot of other supplements, which I've posted about several times. If you are interested, let me know and I'll repost my supplement list here.

I am. Ocean Essence brand. Unfortunately I cannot give you any objective input as I have not had a DEXA scan since switching nearly a year ago.

I am scheduled for a Dexa on June 2 (6 months after my 1st Dexa) Yes a bit soon I know. I have been taking Algae Cal (no meds and no strontium) Had 2 compression fractures Nov 14th), I know it is too soon but I am anxious to know if it at least held to my numbers or got worse. I have another REMS scan in August. If by next November I do not see any good results or it all gets worse I will "consider" meds. I am also exerising

@lindamaegirl
The bone turnover rate in the spine is higher than the hip/femor. So you may see difference in the spine scores and then possibly no change in hip/femor area.

"Improvements or losses in bone density are often detectable in the spine by 6 months, whereas changes in the hip may take 12 to 24 months to become statistically significant on a DEXA scan"

@anatomary I am new here also and think your questions are really important. I also have severe osteoporosis and would rather take supplements so I would also like to know if any of these people who have commented about taking supplements for bone health have had DEXA after using supplements to check bone health and what seems to be working. Thanks.
