Aspergillusfumigatus treatment

Posted by lilianna @lilianna, May 12, 2025

I have had aspergillus for a while but I was always told no treatments it’s colonized. But it persistently shows in fungal culture plus I cough definitely more recently. My February CT showed change in my right middle lobe, consolidation. I am having a CT tomorrow but I know something is going on. If you were treated for this condition what was it, and how long. What meds did you take- I need some info so when I see my pulmonologist I have some knowledge. Thank you. It’s not easy to to think “ more” after I finished MAC three months ago. Thank you

I have MAC and Aspergillosis. I have taken V-fend the second time I had Aspergillosis. I got fibroses of liver . Stopped that drug. Then they did Amphotericin ( horrible infusion drug) caused toxicity to my body). So now I am taking 300 mg daily of Posaconozole with no side affects. My ID dr said can’t cure me. But she will just try to keep these 2 diseases at bay. This is my situation. Hope you find it helpful. Best of luck. 🙂

Mine was identified during my last bronchoscopy so my ID Dr prescribed a 12 week course of Cresemba. I did have to work with my insurance to get it covered and it has to be ordered by the pharmacy as they don’t keep it in stock. My labs don’t show signs of aspergillus so I’m hoping to be able to go off it soon. My worst side effects after adding this in to the big three were headaches and nausea. I also developed tinnitus after being on the anti fungal. Good luck, hope you can get treated and cleared soon.

My 1st bronch in Dec 24 showed mac and Aspergella, the Dr only treated the mac. Feb I was in the hospital with a huge mucus plug and infection. Pulmonologist says that fungal ball was aspergillosis. ID put me on vfend 2x day since the end of Feb. I see him today because my serum level is still low (0.70 even though I'm doing 400mg 2x day. My scan is 90% clearer than it was before (2/27 and then 3/17). I'm on ethambutol & azithromycin for the mac, and nucala for abpa.

@hbcupcake How did you get approval for nucala? We're having to go through a bunch of hoops to get prior authorization for it.

@tw508 I believe my pulmonologist got it approved because I also have ABPA. I don't currently have Aspergillus but I did when I was hospitalized. I think my eosinophil levels were initially high. She did do the prior authorization for me, I'm still on it. 300mg (3 shots at a time) once a month. My Dr at NJH wants me to stay on it, so I keep doing it.

I was hospitalized for pneumonia, Covid and lung hemorrhage. My bronchoscopy showed aspergillosis and MAC. I was treated for 12 weeks on Voriconazole (V-Fend). I believe this was the standard treatment for aspergillosis. The side effects I experienced included photosensitivity and stomach upset which was mainly related to having to stop my Omeperzole due to drug/drug interaction. I avoided alcohol to prevent liver toxicity. Overall, treatment was pretty easy. The pneumonia and mass in my left lung completely resolved. I still have a lot of nodularity in both lungs due to the MAC. I am currently on the Big three antibiotics and trying to get insurance approval for Arikayce. I think the treatment for aspergillosis was much easier than treatment for MAC. Just hoping it doesn’t return. Good luck to you!

How is it determined to need treatment or is colonized?
