Rifampin allergy

I am considering going back on Rifampin. I had stopped it over 2 years ago due to hives reaction. My ID doc suggested I could work with an Allegy doc to "de-sensitize" my body to Rifampin.
Anyone ever try that?

@ranxi Why are you considering going back on rifampin? Have you been on continuous antibiotics these past two years? If so, have your doctors conducted sensitivity testing to determine of your infection might be treated with another medication?

Rifamkin can be a difficult drug. Is this for MAC treatment? I was taken off it and continued the other 2, and that worked.

I was allergic to rifabutin. It caused very elevated liver enzymes so it was stopped. Instead my id doctor put me in addition to azithro and ethambutol for 4 months of amikacin IV and also clofazimine. There are options as you can see instead of being desensitizing which probably would take time. Discuss you options based on the sensitivity test of your sputum culture.

Not sure if rifampin is the same as rifabutin but I got very sick flu like symptoms from that after 3 days. My ID doc wanted me to try it again 3 months later. And I got so sick on day one. Listen to your body.
