Gastro Issues with strange mouthfeel like burning mouth

Posted by derby0707 @derby0707, Jan 11 6:48pm

I had tremendous chronic stress dealing with an aging parent. I began having a mouth sensation similar to burning mouth type which then led me to have a endoscopy which showed all clear except for esophagitis present. Provider immediately prescribed PPIs, which worsened all symptoms gastro wise, finally stopped all of those after 90 days and went to ENT who led me to an alkaline diet which seemed to help. Had another patient endoscopy 1 yr later with a BRAVO monitor which revealed zero GERD incidents and possible low stomach acid. While much has improved, the mouth feel issue still remains often enough 4 days a week, tolerable but aware. I am a dental hygienist so the oral cavity is well known by me. My question is does anyone out there experience this same type of mouthfeel? It has been hard to describe and it occurs within 1.5 hours of a meal, subsides at night. Lots of flossing, brushing and sf-gum to aid in digestion. I had extensive bloodwork panels with all being very good.

I had what appeared to be more of a line than the lacy patches. My most troubling symptoms were the puffy feeling on the cheek lining along with the metallic taste. Until I was diagnosed, I was literally obsessed with “what-ifs.” My stressor was with me for exactly one year. I currently don’t see the specialist anymore because I haven’t had a flare-up. It’s been close to 20 years since being diagnosed.
Did you have the Bravo pH test/ endoscopy because of your mouth issues or were you having GI issues too? Also, if it’s not to personal, do you smoke?

It was time for my colonoscopy and when I mentioned to my gastro doc that my throat and cheeks and lips tingle and burn some, he did an endoscopy at the same appt. Endoscopy revealed some esophagitis so he immediately started me on the PPI and Blockers which did not agree with me whatsoever, actually made things worse. I’m in FL for the winters so I went to see an ENT specialist and he urged me to discontinue PPI’s and do an alkaline diet and had me read Dr Jamie Kramer (not sure I got that last name right), leading expert on digestion. So I went all alkaline completely including a naturally high pH water. That seemed to be helping so I’ve stayed on that path now for 1.5
yrs. My stressor was/is an aging Mother which then makes so much more in life on edge. I no longer live near her, and communication is minimal at this point so far. In October, I decided to have another endoscopy to make sure the esophagus was healing and do the Bravo. The reason I reacted so badly was it was in fact not high stomach acid but low. And taking PPI’s and Blockers was the worst thing I could have done actually depleting my system even further. You have to have enough stomach acid to digest. When you don’t, same symptoms as GERD. Anyway, this mouthfeel is tolerable but annoying, I chew spry sugar-free gum and of course since I’m a dental hygienist, my oral hygiene is excellent. I have never smoked. I do feel that whenever I feel stress, I have the mouth sensation, and generally, if I eat anything hard to digest, I experience the sensation as well. I don’t eat anything after 4:30pm any longer.

Sorry for the late reply as I wasn’t notified of a reply? The mouth issues do sound like oral lichen planus however I never had the same feeling when eating hard to digest foods. When eating those hard to digest meals, do you have any GI issues now that you’ve stopped the PPI’s?

@duncan78 the sensation is only the mouthfeel. When I took PPI’s for 3 months, all my symptoms were much worse which is why I stopped them and went to the alkaline foods. I don’t eat after 4:30pm. I do still have chronic stress with my Mom situation, improved but still there.

@derby0707 weren’t you placed on the PPI due to the oral symptoms you described? Your provider thought it was gastric acid regurgitated from your stomach causing the symptoms. But you said they made it worse and the alkaline diet is helping but not completely? Have you gone back to your GI provider?

@jenatsky I was placed on the PPI after the endoscopy which showed esophagitis. Standard procedure and assumption it is always GERD. After much research on my end and 9 mos later, went to a new gastro doctor who did the Bravo pH test which revealed zero GERD. Low stomach acid (and high stomach acid GERD) have the same symptoms. So we believe I have low stomach acid and PPIs make that so much worse which we believe is why after trying 5 different PPIs initially, we were making the already low stomach acid much worse.
