Repatha side effects not believed

Posted by dinardoefd @dinardoefd, Jul 26, 2025

Repatha for 16 months and results are amazing however, leg pain, calf pain, started 3-4 ago.
Sore, stiffness in thighs and calves.
I won't mind so much but my doctor insists it is NOT related to medication.
I have statin intolerance, my blood work with geno test shows this.
Why does my doctor not believe me when I say I'm having leg pain suddenly after no other apparent reason?
Am I crazy, am I wrong? 60yr old male with CAD, CAC score over 2k but no blockage all less then 70%, no chest pain.
We believe my 1 of 4 parathyroids, remove in 2001, caused calcium to enter blood was having very high serum calcium levels before being removed. Still have 3 parathyroids with not ill effects but damage has been done.
Can these side effect appear months later as mine have or I can it be something else?

Hope Rosuvastatin works for you. I looked up the side effects, and he could probably worsen a lot of existing health problems for me. With no statins and no Repatha,
Due to side effects, I do not know what I can safely try.

@htaish if you find something, please let me know. I read an article that said to take CoQ10 so I have started taking this.

I don't think CoQ10 would help with the severity of my issues, but it can be a good thing to take from my understanding. If my daughter comes up with something else to try, I will take Coke Q 10 with it.

I am 81 years old and had 3 stents put in my Heart Vessels this year..I started with Rosuvastatin 40 mg, after a couple months Horrible leg cramps-the pain was so bad I actually cried trying to get out bed in the middle of the night. Then they put me on Ezetimibe 10 mg and after three days my Tongue and side of my face swelled up. So now I have a Rapatha prescription setting at the Pharmacy I am scared to get.
I also take Multaq and Eliquis and Keppra, which make me “Very Tired”. Is anyone else on any of the above Medications and taking Rapatha? Did it make You tired?

I have just started Repatha two months ago and I have had serious leg cramps twice this week so far. I did this with last statin after I had taken for 3 months without any side effects until the cramps. The lab work completed last time with the statin showed elevated creatinine and I stopped the statin, leg cramps went away. These leg cramps associated with the statin are like nothing I have ever had so I do believe it's repatha related. I doubt this will be the last leg cramps since repatha half life is 11-17 days and I took my last injection 7 days ago. I have tried 3 statins and zetia, and have been either intolerant or allergic to all of them. I have messaged my doctor for advice.

Sue, sounds like you are in a good system. Mayo?
I haven't taken Repatha, and appreciate your review. I hesitate for fear of muscle loss and relax in the pretense of waiting for Crispr. https://ir.crisprtx.com/news-releases/news-release-details/crispr-therapeutics-reports-positive-additional-phase-1-data
I have cardiac genetic testing at Stanford in a few months. But I aced the cardiac treadmill stress test impressing only the techs.
I don't care about bedside manner and usually like the md with the bad reviews. I remind myself that these doctors are studying (thank goodness) while the rest of us are developing social skills.
Because the mechanisms of our side effects are often unarticulated or unknown, I'm not sure that tolerating them is healthful. But I do know that I'm a wimp.

@gently I had my jeans analyzed, and I do have hypothyroidism, and the genetic analysis stated I would be intolerant of statins, possibly which I was because of the hypothyroidism! I copied my genetics and put them into Gemini and ChatGPT and it was amazing with the report indicated

missey, what a good idea. Where did you have the genetic testing?

@missey and @gently I too have major problems with statins, so I understand your need to get answers, as well as your frustration with doctors who don't seem to get this. But PLEASE do not rely on analysis of test results by ChatGPT or Gemini.
Here is why I say this - general AI programs draw their data from a wide range of sources, some of which are unverified. This can even include Facebook and/or blog posts, hardly where you want to get medical advice. So you do not know what underlying data sources it is using to generate the answers.
Medical AI programs, on the other hand, draw their data from vetted sources worldwide - many years of research studies, medical and scientific journals, millions of (anonymized) medical records. Their conclusions are based on verifiable data.
Here is one free medical AI search engine:

Searching for "hypothyroid statin intolerance" returned this information:

You can search for other engines as well.

Repatha is not a statin. The pathophysiology is different. Ask your pharmacist. Also, you could research this online at Pub Med. (part of NIH) I wish you the best.

I have statin intolarence so my cardiologist put me on Repatha 140mg self injection every 2 wks. Started last Dec 1st I have slight leg an knee ache. Also have hip joint pain like I had while taking statin but not as severe, time will tell if it gets worse. After injection in about 1 to 2 days I get double vision lasts about 12hrs. Vision not real bad like seeing one and one third of a playing card. I took statins about 4 different brands over 23yrs had severe joint pain in hips and knees had to wear a hip brace also had soreness in muscles of my legs a back side.
