Reclast Infusions: Side-effects & Recovery time

Posted by cindydee @cindydee, Mar 20, 2018

I just had a reclast infusion last week and have had serious side effects. I had the worst flue like aching for 5 days then my lefty arm became full of inflammation in the wrist, elbow and shoulder which caused extreme pain and I lost the ability to straighten my elbow. Ultrasound showed huge amounts of fluid throughout the arm. The right arm is now starting to have the same symptoms. The pain is excruciating. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Neither the ER doctor nor the Dr. who prescribed the procedure knew what to do to ease the symptoms. Both arms from fingertips to shoulder are swollen and neither elbow will straighten. Anyone else have adverse reactions to the reclast infusion? If yes, how long did it last?

@kaybollinger79 my oncologist suggested so I listened. (Also, my oncologist is in deep denial of these drugs causing such serious side effects.) Finally beginning to listen to my body and make my own decisions and do my research first.

@lululinks my oncologist said there’s no way that reclast caused this. I know better than that. I know my body. It started within eight hours of the shot. Fever pain. Everything they look at the normal symptoms. They don’t look at the rare symptoms that’s why I fired my oncologist. It is 5 months now….I still have pain…but better than in the beginning. I know someone who was in bed a year after the injection. My oncologist wanted me to do another infusion. He said he would add fluid and put it in slower. I thought why would I put poison in me twice?

I had my Reclast infusion yesterday. After all the posts about side effects, I had been quite nervous. But it went beautifully! I drank a lot of water for 2 days before; the nurse administered the dose over 30 minutes, and then slowly gave me a litre of saline. Today I have a slight headache and am a little tired. All good😊

@maradeur glad to hear; hopefully no future issues as well outside of doing what it is intended to do!

@maradeur I am having my Reclast infusion on 12/4/25, I'm scared to death! I have many health issues & I don't want more. I just turned 77 years old & even with many health concerns I feel like I'm in my 50's. I'm hoping my infusion out-come will be like yours! ❤️

I had my first reclast infusion several weeks ago (after a year of evenity and one dose of prolia-decided to switch from prolia to reclast. I have had enormous bags under my eyes ever since starting on the infusions but recently, my stomach is so distended my pants barely fit. It seems i’m experiencing significant water retention. Has anyone had this? i’ve talked to the doctors about the under bags but no suggestions/concerns from them. Have not discussed the weight gain around the stomach. Any advice/input would be appreciated!

@caugie Hi. I had my first Reclast infusion in May 2025 and it was a breeze for me. I've had no side effects to date. I'm 69 and have many health issues as well. Many people arrive here to research potential problems and /or report issues, but I've found it helpful to also search for positive responses to treatment. Do let us know you're doing. Best wishes to you moving forward!

@marytlemons Hi. I would suggest reporting this symptom (abdominal distention) to your doctor. Reclast can affect your kidneys, so it would be a good idea to rule that out as contributing to your symptoms. Best wishes to you moving forward!

@marytlemons it sounds like fluid retention! You need to be a strong advocate for yourself! I’m not trying to scare you but if you are building up retention fluid there is medication for it! Just saying!
