Reclast Infusions: Side-effects & Recovery time

Posted by cindydee @cindydee, Mar 20, 2018

I just had a reclast infusion last week and have had serious side effects. I had the worst flue like aching for 5 days then my lefty arm became full of inflammation in the wrist, elbow and shoulder which caused extreme pain and I lost the ability to straighten my elbow. Ultrasound showed huge amounts of fluid throughout the arm. The right arm is now starting to have the same symptoms. The pain is excruciating. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Neither the ER doctor nor the Dr. who prescribed the procedure knew what to do to ease the symptoms. Both arms from fingertips to shoulder are swollen and neither elbow will straighten. Anyone else have adverse reactions to the reclast infusion? If yes, how long did it last?

I had same experience. My bones hurt for 12 months. Now feeling better and it’s time for another Reclast infusion and i am putting it off. I didn’t have side effects at the time of infusion, but bone pain in hips legs and shoulders, tired & drained after vacuuming, depressed. Doctors don’t really believe it’s the Reclast, but I know it changed how i felt.

I did the 12 months of Evenity and my Dr. suggested Reclast but it scared me when I read the problems from others. I decided to take the generic of fosomax starting this Sunday coming ((the 28th of September). I am scared to death. I took it many years ago and remember feeling depressed so I stopped taking it. My doctor then and my doctor now say they never heard of someone complaining about being depressed. I get it! everyone reacts differently but who wants to feel depressed! I will let you know what happens after I take it. I am hoping for the best but who really knows? They have got to come up with something better.

@vgen, I have wound up with vertigo, swelling in my feet, blurred vision, pain in my side. Don’t take it again. It is bad medicine.

I also had bad symptoms after my Reclast infusion of about two and a half months ago. It was terrible - I was so sick, throwing up for about 24 hours, pain and high fever. A few days later, I had ankle swelling that lasted for a week or more. I was also very tired. My symptoms were not as bad as yours but definitely not just flu like symptoms. I will not take this infusion again.

I’ve been consistently lifting 8 to 10 lb. Weights for the last year, barre and yoga. Hoping this keeps me strong. The doctors are convinced Reclast will help but after a year of bone pain, being tired, depression and vertigo i don’t really want to go back there.

I see my general practitioner tomorrow. The doctor that prescribed it said he had never heard of this kind of reaction and the ER doctor was totally in the dark. The prescribing doctor said it must be working since the inflammation was in each of the joints. This morning my right foot was so swollen that all of my toes were pointing straight up. The pain is almost to the point of being unbearable. And yes, thoughts of just ending it have gone through my head but the repercussions of that keep me from doing it. I don't want anyone to have to clean up the mess!

@cindydee Please find a spine care doctor who will listen to you and take your symptoms seriously (not jut "I've never seen anything like this." there's got to be somewhere th doctor can go to for answers (like the company that makes Reclast). The doctor would have a better chance of finding someone there that could help. iAnd your pain could be better controlled in a hospital. If you have gotten to the point where you are considering "ending it", as you say, let every doctor you see know that. They should be able to help or get you referred to a pain specialist. Keep fighting for yourself until you get the help you need!! You are worth it!
P.s. Stay well hydrated!! It can help if you have excess fluid in the body (swelling of your tissues). and keep your poor feet elevated.

@kaybollinger79 I was put on prednisone and it did nothing outside providing symptoms such as urinary tract infection symptoms, which I have had since my cancer treatment and Urolift implant for bladder cancer x5th time!

I had reclast last Friday and woke up Sunday with pain in bones, joints and muscle. Also been having headaches. I am very tired. I have a hematoma from the injection and I feel there must of been some leaking from the IV. It is very painful. The swelling has gone down, but it all the way up to the side of my elbow. They didn't tell me to drink a lot of water. I feel that would of helped not have these side effects. My pain is better today, but still there.

@lilypaws How are you doing? I can't believe the suffering you have endured. Do you feel your treatment has helped? Prayers for your recovery...you are very brave.

I also have g.i. issues - fructose malabsorption, lactose intolerance and visceral hypersensivity - and had finally gotten everything under control until I got a 1/2 dose infusion of Reclast almost 3 months ago. After that I had the worst constipation I've ever had in my life. I was so bound up and bloated my g.i. doctor did an Xray to see if there was a blockage and there wasn't. A also had a blood test for lipase, a pancreatic enzyme, and my lipase was way below normal. The uptake: I had to take laxatives every day and increase the amount of Creon I'm taking. The problem with the constipation went away after about a month, but the indigestion issues are still going on. G.I. issues are listed as a possible side effect of the drug, and probably if you already have them the drug worsens them immensely. If you look up Reclast on the Mayo Clinic site it lists many, many possible side effects including g.i. issues. So, it is a myth that the infusion will bypass stomach issues.

@lelia You mention taking more Creon for your gastric issues after you were treated with Reclast. Do you have EPI or chronic pancreatitis. I have the latter, "severe" chronic pancreatitis, and is one of the reasons I refused oral meds. Today my rheumatologist, a new doctor, advised me that my diagnosis of osteoporosis was actually osteopenia -- my wrist had a DEXA reading of -3.2 but that was the total radius bone. The 33% reading was -2.3 according to the rheumatologist (I was previously treated by my endochronologist 2 months prior).

The rheumatologist suggested Reclast for me, in place of Tymlos -- I am finishing my second pen shortly. I am concerned about Reclast and pancreatitis. Have you had any attacks since the Reclast?
