What pain meds work well for Gastric bypass patients?

Posted by aprilarlady @aprilarlady, Mar 24, 2017

Good Morning. I am a gastric bypass patient 13 years out from surgery and maintaining my 150 lb weight loss. I have chronic daily pain from arthritis, degenerative disc disease, cervical herniated disc(s), torn meniscus, labral tear in my hip and recurring tendonitis in various places. I take Hydrocodone/Apap 10mg/325 4 times daily for pain since as gastric bypass patients we are not supposed to take NSAIDS. I get very little relief from this. It is in pill form. Does anyone else that is a weight loss surgery patient have this issue and find that it is due to malabsorption and/or anyone taking pain meds in liquid form get better relief?

I had a RNY 9/30/2020 but before that I was diagnosed with fibro, chronic pain, chronic fatigue, and issues with my spine. I am in constant pain. I am taking muscle relaxers and gapapentin in liquid form. I did schedule an appt with my pain management doctors but I’m not sure what to do. I know they won’t give me any opioids or stronger pain meds.

@maliakajeme I read your other post. it seems like most of us are going through a lot of things with our bodies at once. I hope you find answers that will help you get relief from your pain.

Oh @maliakajeme, how I do sympathize with your pain! Though I moderate this group, I had a Roux N Y in 2007 and went through the exact same thing that it sounds like you are experiencing. I think a lot of it has to do with the actual procedure. I have linked up with several patients that have had it and experience severe pain that was approached with pain medication and muscle relaxers.

May I ask, did you have a laparoscopic or open operation?

Welcome to the Mayo Connect community. I am a Volunteer Mentor and am not a medical professional. I can offer my experience and support for what you are experiencing. I also provide references for you to learn more about possible resolution of your issues. I'm sorry to hear that you're having an extended time of pain. I have some questions for you about your experience.

1. When was your gastric bypass surgery and what kind did you have?
2. Have you seen your surgeon about the pain that has lasted 5 years?
3. Are you taking your vitamins daily?
4. Have you had your vitamin and mineral levels checked since your surgery?
5. Do you belong to any other social media groups for people on the Gastric Bypass journey?

Please explain to the detail level you are comfortable sharing, more about your pain and any other effects you are having? I had RnY surgery 4 years ago. I don't have pain with mine, although I've had a couple of other things over the years that have bothered me. I have put on 6 pounds this winter that I'm hoping to get rid of this spring and summer.

Let us know how we can help you.

I had rny 12 years ago. All is going super well with that still at weight. My question is this. I am having “golfers elbow” I only take Tylenol is it ok to take aleve?

Hiya! I have had this on both elbows to the point of surgery to correct it, but in answer to your question, we are not supposed to take Aleve or any other NSAIDS whether over the counter or RX due to the potential harm to our stomachs. You can try Voltaren gel as it is topical and does not absorb much into the bloodstream at all and does provide some relief. Have you been to the doctor? If not consider seeing an orthopedist as they can give you a steroid injection that may calm down the inflammation for a while and/or prescribe what kind of brace may provide some relief. Good luck.

My doctor said absolutely not, ever.
No meds that have any kind of blood thinners.
I take Tylenol Arthritis.
It is not like Advil or anything like that, but it does help.

@momther Welcome back to Mayo Clinic Connect, a place to give and get support.

You had gastric bypass 12 years ago and you have been able to maintain your weight. Congrats on your success.

You are wondering if it is you can take Aleve?

Members like @fourof5zs @ejayne01 @sandytoes14 @judipogo @shrinkerbell have experience discussing this topic and may be able to help.

@grandmar and @aprilarlady said that their providers advised them to not take Aveve. Since you asked the question, may I ask if this is the advice your provider gave you as well?

Good Afternoon. My bariatric surgeon told me way back in 2005 about having to stay away from the NSAIDS. Being that I have a lot of joint issues and have had since my 20's that has been a big problem for me. Do I take any? On rare occasions. I've taken too much tylenol over the years and now have to stay away from that as well, so I take pain med every day that does NOT contain either. I have to have something to be able to function. I have had a couple 30 lb regains in all these years but always take it back off. I'm in one of those periods now due to being stuck at home almost a year now thanks to this pandemic, but working on it. We can do this! God Bless!

I was given the same advice. I have issues with pain, too.
I take Tylenol Arthritis twice a day.
It helps some days better than others.
But what can you take that does NOT contain ANY NSAIDS?

Hi Ronnie. I'm sorry you are having pain issues too. Daily chronic pain can wear you out, I know that. I take a pain med called Nucynta ER twice a day. It sure doesn't get rid of the pain as I have pain in multiple joints, but it at least makes it tolerable most days. They have two versions. Nucynta is for acute pain, like after surgery, or injury and for short term. Nucynta ER is extended release and for daily chronic pain patients like me. There is no generic yet, and it is very expensive, but I have a manufacturer coupon card I use and even after insurance, and using the card, it still costs $100 a month, but that is due to the strength. The lower doses cost much less with the coupon card. I've been on it several years, so the strength has increased over the years as I'm aging and getting more arthritic joints etc. It starts at 50Mg twice a day and maxes out at 250mg twice a day. I am at the 200 mg dose. Look it up to see if in would adversely interact with anything else you may be taking before considering asking your doc about it. God Bless.
