What blood pressure medications don't cause hair loss?
I have had severe hair loss since taking Hypertension pills since 2019. Tried several types currently on Cardevilol since 2020. Cannot take Amlodepine as caused terrible constipation.

Hello @mariserodriguez and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Hair loss from medication can be complicated, as you know, because in most case, it requires going off the medication or finding a new one without that side effect. You said you have tried several medications so I wonder if have tried the one mentioned in this article?

1 ReactionI read through the link you provided. It stated. "Hydrochlorothiazide does not seem to cause either hair loss or diarrhea " I am personally researching this medication as I have been on it for nine months and have lost between 60% and 65% of my hair. when I googled Hydrochlorothiazide, I found information from1: Mayo Clinic 2: SingleCare 3: Drugs.com "Hydrochlorothiazide is a medication used to treat high blood pressure and fluid retention. Some of the common side effects of Hydrochlorothiazide include hair loss or thinning of the hair." 1. 2. 3.
So, YES, as someone on this med. There is substantial hair loss for some...like me. I took this medication based on your information stating that "does not seem to cause hair loss" I would not have taken this med knowing I would lose all of my hair!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I found that beta blockers (like carvedilol and the bisoprolol, which I took) cause more hair loss. I recently stopped bisoprolol because my heart rate dropped so low, but was happy to do so because of the crazy hair thinning. There are also some hair washing habits and products help the hair loss/fall, but it is being a long road to recovery of the hair I lost already. Good luck! Beta blockers have a lot more ugly side effects than just going bald!

1 ReactionMy hair is dry like straw and matting and falling out in handfuls. You would think I was a chemo patient. My feet and legs swell mostly on my right side. I sleep all the time and I wake up exhausted. My urine smells like horse sweat. My joints are having issues. think it is my blood pressure medicine. It progressively getting worse and my blood pressure isn't controlled. My doctor says I can't stop taking my blood pressure meds but I am way worse after 10 years and I feel like this is the last chapter.

1 ReactionI have the very same experience and i am taking amlodipine and enalapril 10mag together,my bp is not controlled as well with allvthe other side effects as yours.I cant even style my hair or even run my fingers or a comb trough my dry falling hair
I have only found one that seems to not cause hair loss. (at least for me) It is Bystolic and its generic nebivolol.
Calcium channel blockers (like amlodipine) and angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) are types of blood pressure medicine that are generally not associated with hair loss.
Does your hair grow back if you stop taking those meds? I'm on Dyazide [contains hydrochlorothiazide] metorprolol, Losartan and Lasix aka furosemide. I don't seem to have hair loss or constipation/diarrhea from them.
Beet juice or beet root will lower blood pressure, If your normal isn’t too high. Worked for me.
