What blood pressure medications don't cause hair loss?

Posted by mariserodriguez @mariserodriguez, Feb 10, 2022

I have had severe hair loss since taking Hypertension pills since 2019. Tried several types currently on Cardevilol since 2020. Cannot take Amlodepine as caused terrible constipation.

Hello @mariserodriguez and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Hair loss from medication can be complicated, as you know, because in most case, it requires going off the medication or finding a new one without that side effect. You said you have tried several medications so I wonder if have tried the one mentioned in this article?

I read through the link you provided. It stated. "Hydrochlorothiazide does not seem to cause either hair loss or diarrhea " I am personally researching this medication as I have been on it for nine months and have lost between 60% and 65% of my hair. when I googled Hydrochlorothiazide, I found information from1: Mayo Clinic 2: SingleCare 3: Drugs.com "Hydrochlorothiazide is a medication used to treat high blood pressure and fluid retention. Some of the common side effects of Hydrochlorothiazide include hair loss or thinning of the hair." 1. 2. 3.
So, YES, as someone on this med. There is substantial hair loss for some...like me. I took this medication based on your information stating that "does not seem to cause hair loss" I would not have taken this med knowing I would lose all of my hair!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I found that beta blockers (like carvedilol and the bisoprolol, which I took) cause more hair loss. I recently stopped bisoprolol because my heart rate dropped so low, but was happy to do so because of the crazy hair thinning. There are also some hair washing habits and products help the hair loss/fall, but it is being a long road to recovery of the hair I lost already. Good luck! Beta blockers have a lot more ugly side effects than just going bald!
