How long do side effects from statins last once you stop taking them?
I have been taking 20mg of Lipitor for almost 2 years and have felt yucky since shortly after starting. My cardiologist allowed me to go off one week and I did not see a difference. He also cut back daily to three times a week. I ache all over - neck, back, hips, knees, elbows, and legs are weak. Recently had a normal CK test, but PCP said we might consider a trial off statins since I am below 200 now. Has anyone stopped taking statins and saw a significant decrease in muscle pain, and if so, how long did it take?

I gave not restarted a statin yet. Headaches, sore and tired legs persist. My cardiologist wants to wait until my pain goes away. Not sure what he has in mind.

1 Reaction@ctjoe7 The CoQ10 might help with the leg problems, even without being on statins. A nurse in the cardiologist's office recommended it when my thighs hurt while taking Lipitor. It seemed to help.

2 ReactionsMy cardiologist at Mayo Clinic Jacksonville recommend taking Co-Q-10. Per them and studies statins reduce Co-Q-10 in body and can cause muscle pains.
I take Co-Q-10 and did not get the muscle pain and weakness others did. My wife was put on statin and was experiencing muscel pain and weakness. I asked if who prescribed it had recommended Co-Q-10 which they had not.
I gave her my instructions on this and to asked her PCP about taking Co-Q-10 to possible help with pain and soreness. She did and he said yes try Co-Q-10. It took several days but it did improve her muscle soreness and weakness.
As with all supplements it is best to check with your medical doctors first. They are the only ones that have your complete medical records and drugs you are taking to make sure a supplement does not affect other prescriptions or other supplement. I have not heard of Co-Q-10 having intererence with other drugs or supplments but I am not a medical professional with your medical history so I always add caveat to check with your doctors before taking any new supplements.

1 ReactionFor everyone who.got through this with excercise, can you share your daily regime? Walking? stationary bike? weights? Stretching (which ones)? Anything else?
Thank you in advance?
Hi
Athletic (dog walking is ok) level exercise and statins are contraindicated.
Read the landmark 2004 Sinzinger and O’Grady ‘Athletes and statins’ study that proved this.
The rationale is, elementary.
The number one side effect (hidden by every prescriber and leaflet) is muscle aches.
Read Taylor and Francis online which says that muscle aches are 95% of statin side effects.
And you will know that the number one side effect of athletic level exercise is, also muscle aches.
That’s how athletes train - heavy exercise midweek to damage the muscles used in their event.
Rest Friday and Saturday.
Muscles recover.
Race on Sunday.
Repeat.
All the best

I had trouble turning over in bed and getting up in the morning . I would start with stretching and just doing "laps" around the house, heat pack, and repeat.... it took an hour to get warmed up to do my regular exercise (dance class, yoga). As one of my physical therapists said to me, "Motion is lotion" - being stationary was not my friend - even sitting in the car for 30 minutes hurt me> I would have to stop and stretch my back. I found that leaning over the trunk and stretching was good. If home, I used a physioball or my desk to give my back a good stretch. I did acupuncture for a while. Although I'm off statins, I still have a cranky low back, however, I don't need an hour in the morning to warm up, and I can drive a few hours without an issue. Good luck -keep moving.

1 ReactionThank you. Much appreciated.
I went off Ruvastin for a month and still had chronic back pain. My PCP said if my pain was statin related, I would feel better in a couple of days.
@pcs In my experience it took several months and I slowly got better. This was after almost two years of suffering. A week off here or there did not make much of a difference.
