Prolia treatment for osteoporosis: What is your experience?

Posted by Veruska @veriska, Mar 7, 2017

I received the results from my bone test and they have recommended I start Prolia. I have read the side effects and I am concerned. Has anyone use this drug and if so what side effects have you experienced. Thank you

Nope. Dr. Simpson says 15 minutes in the sun is NOT harmful. No sunscreen she says. IDK, it makes me feel better to have a little sun! Obviously if you have had skin cancer before, you need to use your own judgment!

Hi Recently, my doctor told me to start Prolia and I like your sel found sideffects and high cost so I decide to take Fosomax which does have side effects but it is les expensive. I will not be taking this medication for too long as I’ve increased my exercises, vegetable consumption , timing my calcium supplements for better absorption. Additionally, I taking more Vit k which helps direct calcium into the bones. I’ve cut out coffee, and considerably reduced my alcohol consumption to 1/2 glass of wine with dinner. I also have appts with Rehab MD and a Feldenkrais class. Whatever I can do on my own I’ll be glad to do. I am very concern and looking forward to doing better. I can’t undergo the Bone density or another 24months so I’ll see how much my t-score is then. No one in this community has given any positive reports on these medications . It would be very hopeful for me to read a positive report. I would like to know how much of Vit D , Magnesium, and VitK. MY PCP didn’t say much to me other than “Don’t fall” and go to the gym more often. I was very disappointed in him or his lack of support and knowledge. He didn’t even refer me for Physical Therapy or Rehab.

I have not had any side effects that I am aware of from Prolia. After taking it for 2 years I still have Osteoporosis but my levels are better than they were 2 years ago. Before Prolia I took Bonviva for two years and my Osteoporosis got worse.

Hi,
I was put on Prolia and straight away I noticed my kidneys weren’t working properly. Now 6 months on I have had 5 serious iritis attacks and serious ear infections in both ears most of the 6 months, NOMORE Prolia.

@barrym: I guess your story along with so many others is why I have chosen to NOT take it. I want to live and enjoy my life NOW, and IF I have a fall, or a break, I will then deal with it. But I don't want to take something that impairs my quality of life NOW, when I may never have a fracture. My best fried who had it so badly that she had kyphosis, fell off a treadmill at our gym, had serious bruises and scrapes, yet broke nothing. Several other falls, nothing broke. She died from a severe fall. Broke NOTHING, but had brain damage that led to her death. The fall was due to excessive alcohol use, NOT osteoporosis.
