Problems months after colon resection surgery: What Helps?

Posted by joyce1 @joyce1, Feb 25, 2017

Three months after colon resection I had a severe stomach cramp this morning and have not had a bowel movement yet. This is the first time this has happened. So far things have been good.

Hi Joyce,
I'm so sorry to hear that you are experiencing such pain 3 months after your colon resection. I'm bringing @starrlight @sallyg @nannytart and @travelgirl into this discussion to see if they have some advice to share. It is painful to not have had a bowel movement. How long has it been since you've had one? Are you drinking plenty of fluids?

I had a bowel movement yesterday and everyday since surgery. The stomach started today. It comes and goes but has not quit and I haven't had a bowl movement yet

I also struggle with ongoing constipation which started right before Christmas. my diet is primarily plant based and lots of fiber
My doctor suggested I try a low residue diet which was difficult for me but I gave it a whirl
Didn't help at all
So I am back on my healthy diet and find that drinking lots of water and staying active and moving really helps
And when all else fails try a dose of miralax
Fortunately things are getting better for me
Good luck

@swatson, I believe you should make an appointment to find out the cause of the pain. Is the pain severe?

Hi @swatson,

How are you feeling? Did you make an appointment with your doctor to find out what’s causing so much pain?

I am also 3 months post op. Unfortunately, things have not been good. I've suffered with severe constipation since the surgery. I woke up at 2 a.m. with left sided pain. I took a Gas-X and it resolved. I believe mine was due to the constipation. I'm going to be having a CT scan today.

I had colon resection..laparoscopic AND open due to adhesions on Jan 4. I thought I was healing great. But now it has been 8 weeks and I have hot pains all across lower abdomen and stabbing pain where surgery was. I just had a THIRD cat scan and they say EVERYTHING looks fine...but I HURT and I BURN. I am SO frustrated!
