Tapering off mirtazapine

Posted by ladydi82 @ladydi82, Aug 24, 2025

Hello, I’ve been on mirtazapine since March 2025. I was on 15mg, but as of last night I am on 7.5mg. I want to completely taper off. How long should I stay on 7.5mg by experience before stopping completely? Like I mentioned, I haven’t been on it long. Thanks!

I was in it a short time, too. It made me so hungry I could eat a cardboard box! 😂

You may be able to split your 7.5 and do that for a couple weeks and split that half again for a couple weeks. I was also on it a short time but literally stopped after the first day (was only in 5mg) because I wanted to eat everything in sight.

I took 7.5 mg for 6 months. It did not help my insomnia and I didn’t gain weight. I just stopped taking it and had no problem.

I was on this medication for a couple of months and it was a very unpleasant experience, the only thing I liked was the appetite it gave me but that was it, getting off them was easy, I took one every other day for two weeks and then stopped and never had any issues doing so, you’ve been on them very briefly so you shouldn’t have any problems.

I have recently come off Lorazepam and since February am trying to come off Mirtazapine. I'm currently down to taking 7mg a day. Throughout the process Ive been really struggling with feelings of derealization, as though my world has become unreal, I have burning and sweating. I'm told that this last stage of reducing Mirtazapine can be the hardest. The reason for coming off these drugs is because they were beginning to have no effect and it was a choice of coming off them or increasong the dose. With the help of my doctor I chose to come off them. Does anyone have tips on how to get through this.

@drucilla222, congrats on getting off Lorazepam, that’s not an easy thing to do, I see that you’re on the verge of quitting Mirtazapine or otherwise increasing your dose. I was taking Mirtazapine for a short time, about two months, I had a bad experience with this medication, it claimed to help with anxiety and sleep problems but I had the opposite effect, I couldn’t sleep well and when I did, lots of nightmares and anxiety came back, I wanted to stop them after a few weeks but the doctor told me to continue and the symptoms will eventually go away, he was wrong and I wanted to stop them asap, I took 7 mg. daily and then I went on every other day for a week and then every two days until I stopped taking them, happily I had no problems after that, the only thing that Mirtazapine helped me with was my appetite but absolutely nothing else.

Ive been on mitrazapine for 4 months 5 days. 3 months on 15 mg and 1 month 5 days on 7.5. Can anyone please tell me if theyve been on it and weaned off? And if they have how did they succeed on getting off it please respond thank you very much

@visionsofelvis - I don't believe I've yet met you on Mayo Clinic Connect, so welcome. I wanted you to know I moved your message here where others were discussing a similar theme about wanting to be off of mitrazapine:

Does your prescribing physician have a tapering schedule you might follow to safely taper off this medication with a minimum of side effects? Are you going to be moving to another medication instead of this one?

@visionsofelvis I did stop talking Mirtazapine quite a while back, I had a bad time with this medication but it was easy to stop, I don’t do very well with most antidepressants so I’m not taking anything else for the time being, I only take Lorazepam.
