Tapering off mirtazapine

Hello, I’ve been on mirtazapine since March 2025. I was on 15mg, but as of last night I am on 7.5mg. I want to completely taper off. How long should I stay on 7.5mg by experience before stopping completely? Like I mentioned, I haven’t been on it long. Thanks!

@frouke how long were you on it and at what dose did you stop? Did you wean?

@visionsofelvis I was only on it for a short time, perhaps a couple of months, it started out bad with insomnia and when I did sleep a little I had frightening nightmares, it really amazed me how many people were praising this drug but then we all react differently. I also recall having RLS from it, the only benefit I had was a hearty appetite which I needed, I weaned off of it for a few weeks, I skipped an extra day and it went well with no issues.

@frouke what was your dose? And you didn’t have no rebound anxiety or anything?

@visionsofelvis I believe it was 7.5 mg., I didn’t have any rebound issues after stopping.

@frouke so please tell me how no issues. I'm on 7.5 now for 35 days and have anxiety sporadically in the day. i hear you have to wean off carefully.

@visionsofelvis You should always wean slowly with antidepressants, I’m suffering from another class of these meds due to rapid tapering. Mertazipine is a tricyclic antidepressant and I found it easier to get off them but I went on another one shortly after so perhaps that’s why I didn’t suffer from increased anxiety, I also take Lorazepam which helps me with anxiety. If you’re feeling anxious while tapering off Mirtazapine perhaps your doctor can start you on another antidepressant to help control your anxiety, it’s not an uncommon practice when going through withdrawal.

@frouke on lorazepam first it a benzo. So are you sleeping ok and you said anxiety is gone. How long were you off mirtazapine before you got on lorazepam?

@visionsofelvis I was on lorazepam before I took Mirtazapine, they’re helpful for GAD, PTSD however they don’t do much for depression. When I stopped taking Mirtazapine I was given Amitriptyline which is the same class of antidepressants but they were stopped due to rapid hear beats.
