Tapering off mirtazapine

Posted by ladydi82 @ladydi82, Aug 24, 2025

Hello, I’ve been on mirtazapine since March 2025. I was on 15mg, but as of last night I am on 7.5mg. I want to completely taper off. How long should I stay on 7.5mg by experience before stopping completely? Like I mentioned, I haven’t been on it long. Thanks!

@tisme - here are a couple of discussions (among many, if you'd like to search for more) on Mayo Clinic Connect you may want to check out on getting off of venlafaxine (Effexor):

I was on this medication for a couple of months and it was a very unpleasant experience, the only thing I liked was the appetite it gave me but that was it, getting off them was easy, I took one every other day for two weeks and then stopped and never had any issues doing so, you’ve been on them very briefly so you shouldn’t have any problems.

@frouke what didn’t you like about it?

@visionsofelvis - I don't believe I've yet met you on Mayo Clinic Connect, so welcome. I wanted you to know I moved your message here where others were discussing a similar theme about wanting to be off of mitrazapine:

- Tapering off mirtazapine https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/tapering-off-mirtazapine/

Does your prescribing physician have a tapering schedule you might follow to safely taper off this medication with a minimum of side effects? Are you going to be moving to another medication instead of this one?

@lisalucier I live in Las Vegas and health groups are terrible here. I have an appointment week from today with this psychiatrist and hopefully he’ll be able to taper me off slow so I don’t have bad anxiety. Began 15 mg on Jan 8 then April 1st began 7.5. It’s been a rollercoaster. You’re lucky you were on it for short time. Any advice?

@visionsofelvis - just wanted to circle back and see what you decided to do. Sounds like you had some doubts about the advice you were given.

Did you do what the physician assistant advised or choose another route?
