Reclast Infusions: Side-effects & Recovery time

Posted by cindydee @cindydee, Mar 20, 2018

I just had a reclast infusion last week and have had serious side effects. I had the worst flue like aching for 5 days then my lefty arm became full of inflammation in the wrist, elbow and shoulder which caused extreme pain and I lost the ability to straighten my elbow. Ultrasound showed huge amounts of fluid throughout the arm. The right arm is now starting to have the same symptoms. The pain is excruciating. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Neither the ER doctor nor the Dr. who prescribed the procedure knew what to do to ease the symptoms. Both arms from fingertips to shoulder are swollen and neither elbow will straighten. Anyone else have adverse reactions to the reclast infusion? If yes, how long did it last?

Hi, my name is Danny, had my first and Last Reclast infusion in June 2024. I had back issues prior to going. Well, a few days after the infusion both shoulders, forearms are awful painful, more so upon waking up in the morning. As the day goes by the pain seems to lessen but the arms start to go numb; only to repeat the whole process the next night / day. I start physical therapy tomorrow and was filling out their questionnaire when I remembered this injection, looked it up and this is what I found! I do hope this eventually wears off because there are days I cannot lift my right shoulder at all. Thank you for allowing me to join and vent!

Hi. I'm having a problem also. I feel like I'm coming down with the flu. Achy, tired and my right shoulder has pain and hard to move. Now I do have Arthritis in that shoulder and it's always a little swollen, but it was feeling good before the Infusion. Next day (yesterday) my arm is in real pain and hard to move. I just happen to have an appointment today with my Primary. I'll see what he thinks. I am so glad I found this group and got to see there are others who feel the same as I do and we're not crazy. My doctor yesterday told me to take 2 Tylenol?? Crazy right? Thank you.

I have refused to receive any more replies infusion. It has been 14 months and I still experience pain in my shoulders left foot and now it’s in both rib cages! I do have an appointment to see Rheumatology but I’m sure there’s nothing they can do for me and it’s probably just a waste of time. My recommendation is to try to stay as active as possible and hopefully overtime the medication will wean out

Yes it apparently happens. The first 2 doses didn't bother me at all. Go
figure! I hope it at least is helping my bones. Thanks for your comment.
Feel better.

a lot of us have had bad reactions to Reclasp. I found both hands swollen and hurting two days after. Severe back and side pain…fever…no energy…join the club. It has been 2 months. I tried reporting it to the fda and when it got to the Last page it said there was an error and it didn’t send it in.

For swelling I drink 48 ounce glasses of lemon water and within 24 hours of swelling went down. It could’ve been coincidence.

My symptoms were dizziness, nausea, and extreme fatigue leading me to jump into bed 4–5 times per day for 3 weeks followed by pain in my affected hip and pain in my jaws. I followed up with my dentist regarding the jaws and he pronounced me safe. I am now 2 months out from the infusion and not sure what to expect next. Funny that my endocrinologist reported to my query about side effects before the infusion that there were “no side effects”, only a prevention of fractures…Nope!

Remember, your endocrinologist is there to try to help build bone mass! I really don’t think they study much or they choose to ignore the side effects from the Reclast infusion and when you have side effects, they turn around and recommend that you go see somebody else for some other issue; Reclast don’t do that, OH yes it does!

thank you. Since the doc denied any side effects before infusion I lost trust and didn’t call in to receive help.

So I had my first Reclast infusion in 1-22. It took this long for me to try it again because I had a bad reaction. I recall feeling fine until I woke in the middle of the night with a 103 temp and severe joint pain. By morning I was also vomiting and couldn’t keep anything down. I spent a miserable wait in the ER during a Covid surge. I ended up being off work for 3 weeks due to joint pain and also recall my ankles and feet being very swollen. My PCP had never had anyone with this type of problem and consulted the Endocrinologist who told him that it wasn’t common but does happen sometimes.
Today I had my second infusion after consulting with the Endocrinologist and deciding this was still my best option. This time I’m on steroids for 3 days. I’m also planning on getting up every 2 to 3 hours throughout the night to hydrate and medicate. The infusion nurse mentioned that some people have reported that Zyrtec helps with the joint pain although they don’t know why. So I’m taking that too. I’ll update how it goes in a few days.

So I had my 2nd infusion 3 days ago and it went so much better than the last time. I think the steroids really made the difference. That plus maybe really hydrating and medicating throughout the day. The highest my temp ever got was 99.5 and only some very mild aches and pains. I feel completely back to normal now. I hope this can help someone else who had similar problems.

What did they do to stop the pain. I am experiencing the same pain and my doctor put me on prednisone and it has done nothing. I have taken a gabapentin, two Advil and a tramadol and it is still horrible pain.
