Oral Lichen Planus: How do you cope with it?
I have been diagnosed with oral lichen planus for over 12 years. Originally it was mild and able to control with Duke’s Mouthwash. In last 5 months have had two major flareups with considerable pain. My condition was managed by my general dentist. I now feel I need someone who specializes in OLP, but have had no luck finding anyone. I live in the Columbia, MD area which is near Baltimore. Does anyone know an OLP specialist in my area?

It doesn’t numb me that good. Not when the dentist gives you shot. You get also can make a mouthwash with and liquid Benadryl ( children’s flavored is better. It like Magic mouthwash. I also use Lidex get and like you it is normally used externally but it helps a lot. I have constant too good stuff

1 ReactionI developed the same problem quite out of the blue. What helped was a steroid dental paste that I applied 3xday for 3 weeks. Now I’ve stopped, but it doesn’t feel as if it’s completely gone. I’m going to start using the paste again.

1 Reaction@nvshaxpur is that dental paste Oracort? That did nothing for me - and I found it frustrating to use too.
No, it was Triamcinolone Acetonide, 0.1%.

1 Reaction@nvhaxpur do you have to apply that paste with gauze kept in your mouth for several minutes (about a half hour for me!)? That was the worst part of the treatment for me, aside from the fact Oracort did nothing for me!
How do you apply the Triamcinolone Acetonide in your mouth? Do you put some on a piece of gauze and put that in your mouth for several minutes?
I use a stop and just hold for a few seconds. Sometimes it burns but then no pain at all.
I used a Q-tip to swipe the medication over the areas of “infection.”

1 Reaction@nvshaxpur do you spit it out after a while? I do the same with Lyderm gel but I don’t need to spit it out. It tastes very bitter.
Lyderm gel has been working for me (it is used off label), but I am going to keep your medication in mind in case Lyderm eventually stops working for me.
I got dental trays from Walgreens and spread a thin layer of the ointment on the front of the trays. Then I just wear them for about an hour.
New to olp diagnosed in May this year. Struggling to find help and answers. One question is how are you certain of a trigger? For example if I were to drink lemon juice my mouth would be on fire, but if I eat an apple (also acidic) my mouth is not on fire. Do the triggers happen internally and externally? I just did a 14vday prednisone taper which calmed down the irritation and pain but all the gum tissue disruption is still there. So it sorta worked? Any input is great, thank you.
