Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm

Hi, my husband has been dealing witb an AAA for two years now. His is 4.5 and his Vascular Surgeon says they tend to be very slow growing. The rule of thumb has s they wait for the until the anyeurism is about 5cm. He too only checks it about every year and has mentioned every one is different. My understanding is that if it does rupture it is vital to go to ER immediately as the bleeding is profuse, rapid and can be deadly. My husband has several co- morbidities which make future surgery exceedingly risky. (large umbilical hernia, CKD retroperitoneal fibrotic mass and PAD) The key has been excellent doctors and doing every thung recommended to reduce risk(s) Take care everyone, you are not alone.

Are you still working? If so, do you have any restrictions? Mine is 4.1cm, haven’t seen specialist yet. Just worried about being able to safely do my job that is physically demanding.

I was diagnosed with a 3cm Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm, which is small however, I am only 49 and do have an extensive family history on my maternal and paternal sides of aortic aneurysms.
Should I request a Cardiac work up? Or should I see a cardiac doctor? I am not sure the next steps.
Not the lottery I was hoping to win! Apparently, this is very rare for my age.

(For @heatherlou76 )I was diagnosed with a 4.1cm ascending aortic aneurysm and i went to a cardio doc ASAP. So yes, even though yours isnt very big, it is important for a doc to monitor it. High blood pressure is a component in the enlargement of these suckers. So keeping b.p. down (.y doc likes it at 110/70 but that is hard for me , he has had to tweek my meds several times. I quit smoking, drinking, and lifting heavy objects. So yes you should go to a cardio doc just to make sure. Your thoratic aneurysm isnt as serious as mine and it is easier to fix. They have to measure 5cm-5.5cm before surgery is recommended. I also have a history of this in my family and there are some genetic diseases related to these types of aneurysms- another reason going to a specialist a good idea

I’m just curious since you mentioned that you have a family history of aneurysms if you’ve been tested for Loeys-Dietz syndrome? My husband found out quite by accident that a person in his family had Loeys-Dietz and after many other family members were genetically tested many had this genetic mutation. Might be something that you may want to look into along with any siblings or your children or family members children may have the condition. Good luck to you.

Today’s descending AAA CT Angiogram results. Followup vascular
in two weeks.

Aug 2025 6.0 x 5.9 cm
Jan 2025 5.9 x 5.7 cm
Jul 2024 5.5 x 5.2 cm

There seems to be slower growth over the last six months since taking supplements, organic collagen powder, colostrum, Red Sage liquid, walking/gardening, and meditating. Time will tell if this will be ongoing.

Am 81 and AAA initially diagnosed by Mayo Clinic/Jacksonville, FL about 20 years ago when 3.5 cm. Two surgeries are now recommended. One is an experimental, dangerous, open chest surgery. Two rehab admissions are recommended, but personally, would not be conducive to my lowered immune system and challenging viruses fought over the past 5 years.

No, I haven't had any genetic testing but will speak with my doctor about it.

My AAA was located last February 2025. 5.2cm
They found it accidentally. A scan for a GI bleed spotted it.
Blessed!
Now a more specific set of scans in September. No heavy lifting.
Life is wonderful. I’m taking 3 of my grandsons fishing this morning.
