Oral lichen Planus: What home remedies or medications help you?

Posted by lovebug61 @lovebug61, Apr 4, 2019

Anyone in the group suffer from Oral Lichen Planus. I am at my wits end with all these erosive sores in my mouth. I've had two biopsies , one in the inside cheek and one under the side of my tongue. The spot under the tongue is extremely sore to touch and has been for over a year. It scares me because the soreness never goes away, sometimes it isn't as sore but nothing helps. Any home remedies for this dreadful condition?

Here are some of the natural products I've tried to improve my mouth as I try to heal from OLP, @lovebug61 -
oil pulling with coconut oil, L-Lysine, rinsing with salt water that has clove and tea tree oil essential oils (not much and must be therapeutic grade), using xylitol (I follow Ellie Phillips on youtube. I can't use her protocol as Listerine is too caustic but she advocates use of xylitol), and now Genuine Essiac Tea, which was designed for cancer but can be used for other conditions. Since I'm using steroids right now due to a flare up, I can't say any of these have been effective to ward off the ulcers or the pain but I'm continuing the tea because it takes 6 months plus to effectuate a change. There is one Genuine Essiac Tea testimonial about OLP that is positive. If you decide to try it, make sure it's the 8 herb formula as there are many copycats. I'm also using a multivitamin by StellaLife that is designed specifically for dental issues, and my periodontist said to make sure I get at least 8000 Vit D IU every day along with a turmeric supplement. I'm always looking and trying different things. So far nothing I've tried has been a fix but I'm continuing the quest and am hoping the Genuine Essiac Tea will, over time, prove to be helpful.

I have lichen Planus Orally, in the genitalia , and on my skin. Some form of anti inflammatory is regularly prescribed! There is no cure but you cam maintain a reasonably pain free life if you don’t let the lesions overwhelm you. I see 3 different Dr’s as they each treat a different body part. But I am reasonably pain free and am able to eat. Best of luck. My Gynecologist refereed to LP as the Trifecta. I have had the disease for about 37years. The treatment is much better now! Foods that aggravate my symptoms are: Any small amount of dairy, any nuts, acid foods and alcohol. Best of luck!

Great info about food. I love anything dairy so I got to watch and reduce as much as possible. Thank you and good luck to you. I am in California.

A lot of good information. I am new to the site. OLP started about 4 years ago, it was my dentist who said it was lichen plans - i had never heard of it and since no other dentist ever mentioned before I assume it is 4yrs.
Thank you for your info, i am saving it, good to know. My periodentist just prescribed Fluocinonide, have not tried it yet.

@artist01, I'm glad to hear the mouth guard gives you some relief...bummer that it costs so much. Thanks for sharing your experience with the mouth guard.

I have had OLP for about 15 years and for most of those years it didn't bother me much but an occasional sore now and then. I always used the fluocinonide gel which seemed to speed healing and help with the pain. And then about 5 years ago it all changed. Now It is oral, vaginal and in my esophagus. all have been biopsied many times and comes back pre cancerous. My mouth and esophagus is the worst. Trying to eat is very hard and painful and my throat is constricted which makes it hard to swallow. I have had 2 metal stents in my esophagus and its been stretched at 20 times. It either gets stuck or I choke. Anywho I could give many more details but here are the things that help me. Lidocaine gel is my friend. salt water is my rinse. Fluocinonide gel for pain. And Clobetasol cream for vaginal flare ups. I do have it a little on my skins and nail but very little PTL. And do have some scalp issues. My primary was clueless and had to find a new dentist. I dont think she is going to help much. My gyn is great. And I see a Pathologist every 3 mouth to keep a close eye on the pre-cancer. I have Crohns so I see a gastro and I have RA and see Rheumatologist . I am reading over you guys say about different things that have worked and maybe one will work for me. Good Luck to all

Didn't know that football players made their own mouthguard. You can buy them fairly cheap online but not sure the fit is that good or if it will help with oral lichen planus.

Hello and yes! I am a 64 year old woman who has suffered terribly from Oral Lichen Planus for the past 2 1/2 years. The doctors have tried Prednisone (intermittently since diagnosis and constantly for the last 8 months), Hydroxychloroquine for 2 years and most recently, Cellcept, but none of these were enough to keep me in remission. Ten days ago, while on Acyclovir for the Herpes virus, I noticed that my tongue felt better while on this anti-viral medication. After researching Acyclovir and OLP on the internet, I found a number of studies that linked these two to a better outcome. I asked my primary doctor if I could stay on Acyclovir indefinitely because it made my OLP improved and for the first time, was prescribed Valtrex (a long term version of Acyclovir). I started it immediately. My OLP symptoms improved and now have gone into a complete remission. Not even my treating dermatologist knew about the connection between Acyclovir and OLP! To be fair, there is also research out there which links Acyclovir to a poorer outcome for OLP. But fortunately for me, and perhaps others out there like me, Valtrex was exactly the piece of the puzzle that was missing from 2 1/2 years of misery.
