Blood pressure meds and side effects

Posted by robal19 @robal19, Jun 5 10:44am

My doctor prescribed Lisinopril 40mg, Amlodipine 10mg and Metoprolol 50mg since March 2025. Side effects are for me diaharra every couple of days, ankle swelling, bad sleep and dreams, very sleepy during the day to the point I'm so tired, depressed and frustrated. Doctor says no real worry but I am to the point I'm thinking of cutting Metoprolol in half and maybe even Amlodipine in half. Doctor doesn't seem to help figure out how to fix my anxiety over the side effects.

Please, what can be done for low BP?

Hi @beardwood1954 , and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect.

As you wait for members to comments, it may help to check what others on Connect are specifically discussing about low pressure. I did and search from the box at the top of the home page: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/search/?search=Low+blood+pressure

I am not a medical professional. From my experience I understand there are general guidelines, but the level that blood pressure is too low really does depend on the individual, so best discussed with your doctor.

What is your blood pressure, are you keeping a log? Are you currently on medication that may be impacting it? What symptoms are you having?

Talk to your Dr and ask why 3 meds verses 1. If you cant talk to your DR.
It is time to find a new one

I was on 1/2 of minimum dose Lisinopril last summer; I could only tolerate a few days of it because it triggered my collagenous colitis with resulting extreme diarrhea. I didn't go on it for BP, but newly diagnosed chronic kidney disease. I don't have high BP (avg. about 120/70) and the Lisinopril was for kidney function. That said, psyllium husk (active ingredient in Metamucil) helps D by adding bulk and slowing things down. The insoluble fiber adds bulk and soluble feeds the hopefully friendly bacteria. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0022316622072613

I also have diarrhea while taking the Lisinopril, amlodipine and Metropopal. But, I didn't start getting it until my Amlodipine dose was raised and was given new prescription of Metropopal. Sounds like a possible link

Why are you on each med?
Ask your Dr, some have no time and take the easy way out pills and more pills.

Over the years, starting at age 62, different doctors, a rise in bp, adding a new BP med with what I already was taking. I'm now 79 and this past year a higher dose of Amlodipine prescribed and a new med Metoprolol prescribed.

Try taking amlodipine at night before bed.

I also take Lovastatin at bedtime and checking on what I've read about it not a good match to take with Amlodipine.

Metopolol kept me in my bed all day. No energy, sleepy, no ambition. I now take Bystolic (name brand only due to acute medication allergies) at night and now I can go an entire day without a nap. Sometimes its the little things. 🙂

Your comment made me smile!! For me this past week, I gradually stopped Metropopal because it was just as you described. I am working on changing the time I take Amlodipine. I took Lovastatin today at 6am with my breakfast and didn't have any stomach or sleepy issues. I took my Amlodipine 3 hours later and no stomach or sleepiness for the last 2 hours. I am at the park now and walked for 45 minutes. I hope this is a good sign.
