Osteoporosis meds: How do they work?
I've been reading about osteoporosis and this is what I've seen so far: An individual builds bone until about age 30 then they begin to lose bone. Osteo meds do not help you build bone, they may actually prevent the natural bone building process but they do help you retain the bone you have but can make bone brittle. Correct?

There are studies re women and excess calcium supplementation and heart disease so doctors tend to prefer you get calcium from food sources . But if not possible to get the daily requirement, then take a ca supplement. supplement
@grandmabubblestwin Wow like your handle. Bones in order to be strong need calcium ,magnesium ,phosporus all the minerals. We get these from foods, greens in particular. However weight bearing is important lifting weights ,push ups against the wall if not floor swimming. Some people need more so they take supplements but you need to have you labs checked to see if you need a supplement. Talk to your Dr.
We discussed this but I still just couldn’t keep it up there with diet, so he added a modest supplement.
If you are taking a calcium supplement take vitamin c with it so it can bind and be absorbed into the bones better

Your welcome...calcium cannot absorb into the bones. But when you combine it with vitamin c, the calcium molecules bind to vitamin c, vitamin c absorbs really well by the bones. Which makes calcium absorbed well too. Hope that this helps you.
Also get a lot of sun. Thats the best vit D you can get
It's always been my understanding that vit C is helps in the absorption of iron. (e.g. tomato sauce (vitC) helps absorb the in-home iron in pasta. Vit D Vit k are helpful with calcium absorption along with some minerals . Sun is great but if you have sunscreen on not sure how much is being absorbed. Also if you live in northern climes, no way to get enough d from the sun. Fatty fish like salmon the yolks in eggs and cooked mushrooms are good sources of Vit d. But hard to get enough from food.
Correction: "non-heme " iron (not "in-home" ) Google did that.
@sue225 All minerals are important for the body as the body cant make them we rely on the food that has all the vitamins in and minerals but when the lab test says we ate lacking in a mineral or vitamin we go to supplements. But check with Dr. first to have your labs. done. They say that 15min of sun without sunscreen is o.k. but in shade not direct sun. I don't know
