Dealing with a Spouse with a “Mild Cognitive Impairment”

Posted by tryingtimes10 @tryingtimes10, Dec 31, 2024

My husband was diagnosed with MCI in 2019. He is pretty independent, just forgetful of time, dates, location of places, anything electronic & events from our life together (we’ve been married 52 years). It’s all just getting to me. I find myself wanting to be alone so I’m not continuously reminded of these changes. Because my friends/family are out of state, working, or involved with their own families, I really have no one to talk to so I’m seeing a therapist twice a week to deal with the sadness, anger, grief I have over his condition. I just wonder if other women find themselves in this position & how they are dealing with it.

Dear Friends: Thanks for sharing. Kindly give us the details of how to make appointment with HR BLOCK for preparing our Taxes . We live in Baltimore; is there any recommendations for reaching agent similar to HR Block in Baltimore areas? Thanks in advance, ksl.

You can find an H&R Block (or other tax preparer) by going on the internet and searching for the name of the company. The website will then supply you with the offices in the Baltimore area.

Many thanks for sharing. Please give me details of how to reach & make appointment with HR Block for my Taxes? We live in Baltimore. Please help as soon as you can. Thanks, ksl.

Go to http://www.hrblock.com. At the top center right of the homepage, click on “Find an Office” and enter your zip code or address and you will be given a list of offices near you.

There are many different options for how you can work with your assigned Tax Advisor. You may even be able to do everything on-line. We uploaded everything in advance of our in-person appointment so when we arrived, we only needed to review our returns and sign them. You may even be able to approve and “sign” the returns remotely. Message me with any additional questions, GOOD LUCK!

I just googled "spouse with cognitive decline" and found this site. I relate to so much I'm reading! My husband has various serious health issues that have been ongoing for approximately 5 years and, after noticing several changes in him, I talked to our doctor. She referred us pronto to a memory care doctor who diagnosed mild cognitive decline. He is normally stubborn and can be difficult, this makes it worse. 🙁 I get so very frustrated with him. At the moment, he is insisting on doing our taxes - which I made clear I don't think it's a good idea and want to get a tax accountant. He won't hear of it - he wants to prove to himself he can still do it. He has been hospitalized twice in the last 6 months so physically he is still not his best - which exacerbates his mental health. I'm tired of the arguments, the nastiness, the wanting his own way (at my expense!). How does one cope with this daily?

The IRS has on website "Free Fill-able Forms" which has all the forms, and does the arithmetic. Maybe you can check it out before you sign the return. And maybe just compare with last years return to see that it has same forms and numbers are "in the ballpark" Your local library might have trained volunteers who do returns, so you don't have to pay a tax accountant. Wishing you the best.

Today almost everyone uses the standard deduction and it's really easy to manage if you have some online ability. If he cannot complete it, you can. Just read the instructions and follow them. You have to sign anyway.

I was in the same boat with the taxes and this is how I worked around it. I told my husband that he needed to have the taxes done and filed by a date certain….and if he missed that date, I was going to make an appointment with HR Block. He agreed.

Well, 3 weeks went by and he had made NO efforts to do them. So I told him, we’re getting close to the deadline. I am going to go on-line to make an appointment with HR Block “just in case.”He agreed. HR Block assigned us a Tax Advisor and we were encouraged to start uploading documents in advance of our appointment….but had still not committed to having HR Block prepare them. And then our Tax Advisor said, “I have everything I need. Can I start preparing your returns.” At this point, I did NOT consult my husband and simply said to the Tax Advisor, “Go ahead.” I then waited until my husband was in a good mood and relaxed later in the evening and said “Hey! HR Block said that they have everything that they need from us and can prepare the return and we can just review and sign it at our scheduled appointment. It seems so easy so I just told him to go ahead,” And my husband agreed!

I actually think that my husband knew that he would have trouble preparing our tax returns but was too proud to admit it….and I gave him an easy way to hand off that responsibility to someone else. Just a suggestion to see if it can work for you,

Hi @alwayda, in 2018 my husband kept putting off doing our taxes. I knew something was amiss, but he had not then been diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease.
I filed for an extension with the IRS, paid what I thought we would owe, and purchased H&R Block software to try to do the taxes myself. Since we had some foreign source income, it was too difficult for me, and I wound up taking them to H&R Block in town.
We were assigned to a senior consultant who knows her stuff (that's important), and I've been taking them there ever since. I tried AARP one year, but they didn't have anyone certified in something we needed so I wound up taking them back to Block.
My husband just avoided doing them, and was relieved when he didn't have to.
H&R Block is going the route of more and more automated, electronic filing, etc. so sometimes the personal touch is missing. However now we get side by side comparisons of our taxes each year.
They always try to sell "Peace of Mind" for $50, a kind of insurance policy for if you ever get audited, but I don't go for that as it's redundant with the guarantees that come with their tax preparation.

Good to hear that HRBlock worked for you as well! I knew last year that we were headed to this route when my husband, who has always navigated TurboTax on-line with ease, struggled with preparing our returns so I had explored options beforehand in the event we needed outside help.

I found it quite easy to upload all the necessary documents since most were sent to me that way….or I could just take a picture of a document it and upload it. Hopefully, we can now stay with them going forward!

I would pursue other areas before HRBlock which can be quite costly for a simple return

Our relatively simple Federal and NJ returns cost $275 to prepare—and that fee seemed reasonable to me. I checked but our returns did not meet the requirements for the various “free-filing” options available.

Thanks but ours is not a simple return. He insisted on downloading TurboTax which he's always used. I am an accountant - one that absolutely hates tax work!! I do know tax accountants - one in particular I want to use but my husband is adamant that he is going to do it. It's the constant hassle that has me worn out - plus all the time on my part lost to keeping tabs on everything - it's exhausting.
