Thoracic aortic aneurysm 5.2 Advice-please

Posted by jenali @jenali, Oct 11 6:52pm

I was told eight years ago that I had an aneurysm (breast cancer MRI), so they’ve been watching it. It has grown very slowly over these years. Well last week I finally met with a cardiovascular surgeon and he’s recommending surgery. No hurry, but don’t wait too long kind of advice. It’s a lot more surgery than I thought it was going to be. I thought a less invasive method, but he said there isn’t, that it has to be crack my chest open-open heart surgery. Does anyone have this kind of aneurysm? If so, what kind of surgery? Should I wait? It’s currently 5.2cm. Please help…I’m very scared.

If Texas makes it easier for anyone, my surgeon was Dr Anthony Estrera at Memorial Hermann in the Houston Medical Center, https://health.usnews.com/doctors/anthony-estrera-457326
He is not only an exceptional surgeon but a great person and the care was incredible.

Dear All,

Thank you for the great information and resource you’ve provided. I was wondering if anyone that has done a lot of research can recommend a few reputable surgeons at Cleveland or Mayo?

My dad is at 5.2cm ascending mid segment.

Thank you very much

For Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, I would strongly recommend Dr. Jack Haney. He did a CABG, complex fistula ligation, right coronary aneurysm re-sectioning and a Bentall procedure with the Bentall procedure occurring after the aortic root ruptured at the end of the previous 3 procedures. He does due diligence up front before going into surgery. He worked on me for 13 straight hours 5 weeks ago.

Congratulations on having completed surgery and hope you’re recovering well; a harrowing journey. Thank you for the rec for Dr Haney!

During your workup and research process, I was wondering did some surgeons only do aortic aneurysms and others did a scope of cardiovascular surgeries? Is there a preference or it’s sort of determined by the Mayo Clinic which member of the surgical team is most appropriate for your case?

Thank you very much.

I’m going to a second opinion at a larger hospital…where I’m going to have the surgery too. My appointment is next Friday with Dr. Serna, he’s at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pgh. Everything I have read online he sounds like he will be a perfect fit for what I need. He has a five star rating. So I feel good about going to see him and him being my future surgeon. Yes I am still nervous about the recovery, but I’m feeling better that my ducks are getting in a row.

One of Dr. Haney's specialties is aortic root and ascending aorta surgeries including Bentall procedure. He also handles the "weird stuff" which is why my cardiologist at Mayo referred me to him. I had a complex coronary fistula system, a large aberrant bronchial artery as well as a cto LAD which was missed in by my local cardiologist because he relied too much on a nuclear perfusion test which erroneously assumed the blood flow from the complex coronary fistula was the LAD when it was actually goin straight to the pulmonary artery.
Dr. Haney also does heart and lung transplants.

Edit: My root was at 4.8cm and ascending aorta 4.7cm. After repairing the right coronary artery aneurysm, the aortic root ruptured. it turns out that the tissue was fragile. We had discussed various options in the event it needed repair so he was ready when that happened. I was very fortunate that is where it happened and not at home!

I am going on 2.5 years out from this surgery. I was diagnosed, by accident at my local hospital. They said it measured a 4. I was waiting for my one year followup when I ended up having an emergency double aortic dissection. My aneurysm was a 4.5 at the time of surgery. I was repaired in three places, at the root, the arch, and the descending aorta. I must say I had few symptoms. I got warm and sweaty at my hairline, my eyes felt funny and I had flashers. After about 5 minutes I began to vomit and went to the hospital. I was life flighted to Mayo (I live 2 hours away) I immediately went into surgery, I am lucky to be here today. BUT the surgery, to be honest, I think it was easier than knee surgery recovery, which I had a year before. I came home from Mayo on Tylenol and never needed any more pain medication than that. The most difficult thing was taking it easy to give myself time to heal. I began by walking every minute on each hour I was awake to build myself back up. Now I walk 2 miles or ride my bike for 8-13 miles depending on my route and time. I also do water aerobics and swim. The surgery is the same. Get a doctor/surgeon with skills, you trust, and can relate to. Do the surgery before it becomes an emergency. Wishing you the best and good health from here on out. I am a 71 YO female. I was active prior to my emergency.
