Spotting Following Cortisone Injection

Posted by toromama @toromama, Feb 19, 2021

Anyone else experienced spotting following a cortisone injection? This is my second experience. Both times it started about 10 days after the injection. Just wondering how long it usually lasts. The first time was a number of years ago and I thought it only lasted a few hours. I'm now on Day 2. I'm 61 years old and went through menopause when I was 52.

Yes had two biopsies in office neg. Everytime hip injection spot bleed. Then had to do hysterscopy D &C. Turned out 2 small polops that probably showed the thickening on ultrasound. Everything ok now. Wish doctors would put us through this.

Thank you for your reply. So you are menopausal and you also had a thickening of the uterine lining too?

Post menopausal 67. Yes kept going up from 6 than 7 than 8mm. I know the cortisone shots in hip cause spotting about week later. Don't know about thickening. But poloyps added to thickness.

I'm 68 postmenopausal since 51. Using Estradiol vaginal cream because I have pessary for prolapse. I get steroid injections for arthritis in both shoulders and 1 thumb. Feb 2nd I had injections in both shoulders and the 1 thumb, never got all 3 at the same time before. 2 weeks later I had spotting. Spotting only on tissue for 3 days. Went to gyno had ultrasound with 7mm uterine thickening. Im taking 100mg progesterone since and go the 24th of April for repeat ultrasound. I believe it was just a perfect storm combination that caused the spotting. I hope the thickening is down below 5 as my gyno wants. At least I know that others experienced this too.

Hello oh my goodness I thought something was wrong myself. I just had a cortisone shot in my hip on June 18th and was wondering why I was like on my period. I went through menopause 30 plus years ago, so inam wondering if he even hit the right place. If it doesn't stop I am going to the hospital to see they do an x-ray to see what happened.

I wonder if topical corticosteroids can cause spotting too … has anyone experienced this using cortisone creams/ointments?

Hi Rashida, I have used topical creams and not had any problems but since now I have had a shot in my hip and after 22 years of not having a cycle, cramps or anything, I would not use any type of creams or ointments. I am just flabergasted at this and appaulded that my orthorpedic didn't tell me this would be a side affect of the shot. Never again.

I am 66 postmenopausal for 12 years. I have now had 2 episodes of post knee injection bleeding 10-12 days after Kenalog(triamcinolone acetonide) injections on my knee (11-28-22 and 3-16-23). I had a D&C in May of 2022 and follow up Ultra sounds and PAPs in Oct. of 2022. I saw my Gynecologist after the first episode and was told this is not uncommon, but we will watch to see if anything else develops. I was surprised when it happened the second time. I have had other injections in my back with a different steroid with no bleeding. Unfortunately the Orthopedics' office only uses Kenalog for knee injections. So I am left to find a different route for knee pain. Which is unfortunate because the Kenalog worked well. They have suggested Hyaluronic Acid injections. I hope this post helps

I see an Orthopedic dr but no idea of the medications name but I do think you should get that information on the web or call the dr that gives you the injection

Spotting? I got a gull blown period 10 days after I receive a cortisone shot in my foot. I’m 61 and my last period was at 44. I’m presently experiencing it. I’m on day 4. I knew it came from the shot. 12 years ago I got one in my knee. Never had hot flashes but got them after the shot. This time I experienced similar hot flashes where I would get hot and beading sweat around my forehead. Surprise at day 10 when I started bleeding. Last time I asked the doctor for half the dosage. This time I didn’t know I was getting the shot so I had no time to think.
