Low Blood Pressure Apparently Causing Me to Feel Bad

Posted by SusanEllen66 @SusanEllen66, Jun 12, 2023

I’ve been having waves of feeling like I’m going to pass out. It’s been going on for a few months.
Today I decided to take my blood pressure while I was feeling bad. It was 117/59. Five minutes later 113/54 Five minutes after that, 106/65.

During that time my heart rate was normal at 76, and oxygen level was 98%. My EKG showed a sinus rhythm.

I would say 106/65 is low. I don’t take any heart medication so I’m not sure what is going on.

I’m having trouble with my sleeping and am doing a sleep study this week.

How does someone raise their blood pressure?

That’s great
Hope all’s goes well

@SusanEllen66 I had the same problem this past year. Upon standing my BP may drop to 88/50. I would be dizzy and unsteady when up. I had to stop for a minute or two before trying to walk anywhere. Cardio Dr. put me on an Rx (three times a day) that keeps my BP up during waking hours. Now after a few months, the side effects were not helping me retain fluids and gain weight. This I need to do. I am trying to recoup from surgery on 5/19. So for now, I am stopping the Rx but my BP seems to be staying up. I do my neck, and leg exercises beside walking up our big barn and back. This seems to keep my BP from becoming too low. I hope this helps. KLH

I have been having same problem.
Low blood pressure every time I check it.
80/50 never higher than 100/65
I feel dizzy and tired all the time.
Tried everything I knew.
Exercising, drinking water, electrolytes, dark chocolate.
My stomach is not happy with coffee.
I don’t know what to do.
I have scheduled today a cardiologist appointment.
Anyone experienced this problem and has some ideas how to fix it?
Thanks,
Felicia

@sueinmn thanks for your reply. Anxiety is my “middle name”. I have had, and have been treated for generalized anxiety for years.
I cannot say that anxiety is not causing me to feel waves of total physical collapse. It certainly could be. My neuropathy has gotten worse lately, and it’s concerning.

I’m not worried about aging at all. And living alone is actually a wonderful change from the previous nightmare I experienced.

I do belong to the aging well group amongst others.

Thanks for your support.

Hi, I will share something that has helped me with anxiety.
It is real. Last year we lost my younger sister at 53 to cancer. My 77 yo mother is constantly saying I am all she has left. Two weeks ago I learned I have a CAC of 1,208. We are waiting for more tests. We are not telling mom. I obviously want very much to outlive her. I am 5 years older than her father when he died of "hardening of the arteries" on his 52nd birthday.
I think the first thing to do is externalize and not identify with a condition. Anxiety is a condition. It is not an identity. Sense of self comes from where we choose. It only comes from what happens to us or from physical conditions if we allow it.
Feel the feelings. They are real. However, if we see them as a condition to be addressed, rather than identify with them as who we are, it is allows step forward. We are not our illnesses.

For a few months, I had what felt like I would describe as low blood sugar. I was lethargic and weak And didn’t have the energy to get more than small tasks in the house done. I am 72 and take blood pressure medication now, but before that all started, I was pretty active all day every day. I went over my meds with my doctor and after a lot of reading, I suggested dropping the beta blocker I was taking. They not only made my blood pressure low, but my heart rate would frequently get and stay in the low 50s. I also started drinking electrolyte base drinks with coconut water in them by body armor, as well as an 8 ounce glass of apple juice when I felt particularly wonky. This seemed to help me get right on many days. I also can no longer drink coffee.😭 When I was feeling almost narcoleptic I thought it would help, but all it did was raise my heart rate to an uncomfortable level very briefly. I don’t know that my comments can help you much, especially without knowing if you take any medication. I have frequently found those to be my culprits, or at least a way to try and get on the right track. Good luck!

Hello @chrisaw and welcome to Mayo Connect. I'm sorry to hear of all of the stressors you have experienced in the loss of your sister and now with your own health concerns. I appreciate you sharing the way you have chosen to look at these stressors so that they don't become part of your identity.

It is definitely important to feel our feelings, but not choose them to rule our lives. You are right when you say, "We are not our illnesses."

I would like to invite you to join another Connect discussion which might be helpful to you as you deal with this new health issue. Here is the link,

Have you ever tried compressive stockings or compressive sleeves for blood pressure I have a low blood pressure to and compressive sleeves help drinking adding more salt helps to but not too much
Try to add salt throughout your day stand up slowly so I mean helps build your blood pressure. Try to keep yourself cool try to keep yourself hydrated take a sips throughout the day don't golf your drinks. Get your thyroid checked did you get a heart echo test and get your blood sugar checked. Get a zeal patch put on.eat small meals throughout the day. Actually 90 blood pressure under 90 is considered low but it might be different for you everybody's different. And slow heart rate is under 60. But once again everyone is different..

My husband had low blood pressure that he monitored over the course of a day. He was very proactive about doing everything he could to keep the bp up and it would still drop down to 90/60. One of the things he did was to read the small-print blurbs that came with his new prescriptions and to go online to read about supplements he was taking. To his surprise he found that some supplements he had been taking forever drove down blood pressure. So, a periodic review paid off.
