Mitral valve repair

Posted by yoanne @yoanne, May 12, 2016

I just joined the mayo clinic connect and want to say hello.I had a mitral valve repair , 5 weeks ago, carried out in the heart center of the cologne university. they did it by a minithoracotomy at the right site (i.e. NO sternotomy). yesterday I had my first control by my own cardiologist.he was very impressed, an ablatio was also done.for the next three months I need a "bloodthinner".what happens afterwards, I don't know. I hope to find answers from other patients, how they will be treated after these 3 months.
I am dutch, but I have been living in Germany since 1970.

Hello Yoanne,

Thank you so much for your detailed mitral history and the detailed anatomy of your mitral surgery. So far as I'm aware, I have experienced no A-Fib attacks. I am, however, planning to meet one more time with my Rheumatologist (for Lupus), with my cardiologist, and with my cardio Surgeon to ensure there are no predictable conflicts among the three disciplines. During discussion with my doctors, I shall inquire deeply into my physical state, including questions about the existence of or likelihood of my suffering A-Fib attacks. I shall also ask if I might be facing an ablation procedure. I have seen the procedure mentioned in several of the Mayo postings I have read.

As you encouraged, I am not putting off surgery. I have scheduled my surgery for October 12, 2016.

Thank you again for taking so much trouble to help me through this procedure.

Chris

before I decided, which hospital I would go to, I did a lot of searching. I remember one site with good profound information about mitralvalve repair. the site is made by the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. (http://www.mitralvalverepair.org/).
My confidence in their team was so big ,that I thougt about going there.in spite of the costs I had to pay. I changed my mind when I learned that in germany many cardiac surgeons are highly qualified in this kind of operation (minimal invasive).
I would like to know,if you already read about this hospital. may-be this site is helpful.

Hi Yoanne,

I have chosen the Sequoia Hospital in Redwood City. Both my cardiologist and my surgeon practice at this facility. I have every confidence in each of them. I am glad you found excellent surgeons in Germany that could preform your minimal-invasive surgery.

Thank you for helping me think about the choices available to me.

Hello
my surgery was 6 days ago in St Louis, MO., so we are about the same. I came home from the hospital Friday. Have not needed any pain medication except tylenol, and that is just preventive. The surgery follow-up nurse called this moring to see how I was doing and if I had gotten the new prescriptions filled- I hadn't. So Am working on that. Not anxious to have 4 more drugs but don't want a stroke either. The home health nurse is coming by later. They want more blood work and will check incisions. Tell me how you are doing.

Welcome to Connect, @memw. How are you doing? Did the home health nurse have any suggestions, that you may liked to share? Only if you wish, of course. We look forward to hearing from you.

This is my 1st Post, so, I hope I do this correctly. I am about to have valve and maybe some CABG surgery, but, I don't have an understanding of who I can ask questions of to know why my surgeon was selected for me, as well as basic questions like how many similar surgeries my surgeon has done in the last 3 - 6 - 12 months...last 5 years and career. What results patients have had - I see no reviews anywhere. I suspect the elected surgeon is terrific, but, I have extreme concern that my asking questions will alienate me from the surgeon and staff. I have no interest in creating disharmony...it just seems like this sort of info should be made readily available so I don't have to ask the surgeon directly about his background...possibly create hard feelings, etc.. It seems to me the info should be presented by objective, statistical data or from a 3rd party or managment team. Help please. This info must be available somewhere - somehow without causing an upset.
