Midwifery

Mayo Clinic is thrilled to be celebrating 25 years of midwifery service in 2022! The Certified Nurse-Midwife team provides care throughout the Midwest as an integral part of the Obstetrics and Gynecology team.

Our midwives are advanced-practice providers with specialized training, education and certification in obstetrics and women's health. Nurse midwives care for women from early adolescence through the onset of menopause, including prenatal and birth care. Just like physicians, they are qualified to prescribe and administer medications as independent, licensed practitioners. Midwifery care focuses on providing holistic, evidence-based medicine and encouraging women to make informed decisions about their health care.

Midwives primarily provide care for low to moderate risk pregnancies while also providing support to all patients receiving care at Mayo Clinic. Midwives manage patients with gestational diabetes, advanced maternal age, obesity, miscarriage, hypothyroidism and patients with a history of cesarean birth. Midwives collaborate and consult with their physician colleagues as needed when high risk conditions arise.

Midwifery care is available at a variety of Mayo Clinic locations throughout the Midwest. Delivery sites are available in Southeast Minnesota, Southwest Minnesota, Northwest Wisconsin and Southwest Wisconsin in the Mayo Clinic Health System. Prenatal care provided in Rochester is available for local and destination maternity patients. Within the Rochester practice, midwives manage patients on the Owl, Loon and Sparrow teams including through the Early Pregnancy Clinic.
