What do you do about the Thrush?

Posted by Christine @thisoldewe, Jul 23, 2023

I am on Ventolin (nebulizer) three times daily, BREO (one puff), and Spiriva (two puffs) This has been very beneficial - not complaining about the treatment results... but... the 'thrush throat' drives me nuts.
I use 'Magic Mouthwash' daily, and sometimes Nystatin (four times daily for 10 days).
This keeps it 'down but not out'.
Is it reasonable to assume that this should be completely gone?
I know this may be complaining about the more minor concerns, but it is so annoying.
Any ideas? What works?
Thanks so much for any tips!

You could try Probiora pills - can buy online, which are supposed to improve the micro biome
Was never quite sure whether they helped but maybe something to try

When I was undergoing chemo for cancer, staff suggested for thrush rinsing 3 times daily with 1 tsp baking soda & 1 tsp salt to a cup of warm water. It worked for me.

Hi, I have my first experience with this started in May. My doctor gave me diflucan and then sent me to an ear nose and throat dr when after 2 weeks it didn’t go away. She put me in a 21 days or the diflucan and added clotrimazole 10mg trichromatic (generic for Mycelex). This helped but did not resolve. I started searching the internet and saw a candida cleanse recommended. Reading the descriptions I saw the main ingredients to be various lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifisobacterium. Found a Wonens daily probiotic at Costco and started that about 2 weeks ago. The thrush seems to be almost gone! I have a follow up appointment tomorrow so will see what my dr thinks. About the probiotic. I hope it goes completely away!!

Hi Ina,
Thank you for your suggestions.
I am on blood thinners and this rules out a lot of medications for thrush.
i am to persevere with the Magic Mouthwash.
The pharmacist said the same thing, but suggested some extra strength Cepacol lozenges to control the throat discomfort. So that is what I have; using between the mouthwash.
It is disquieting to have these 'bugs' in there and not able to get rid of them! I hope you are able to conquer this; there is enough on out plates.
I was hoping for the magic pill, but those are in short supply.
All the best.

I got thrush when I was taking Flagyl….I know how annoying it is. I swished and swallowed 4 times daily…..it took over two weeks to clear it up. It can be stubborn. I don’t know what happens if a person is on antibiotics for a year. I guess it keeps it down to a degree.

Yup, uh huh, chronic thrush- fluconazole every few months, tho that simply lessens the severity.

Thrush is mouth candida (yeast). Probiotics and some anti yeast supplements might help for those of you that can not tolerate drugs.

What is the best probiotic to take during the antibiotic treatment for MAC. When I ask my ID or pulmonologist, they say that a balanced diet is enough; but is it really enough when antibiotics kill your gut bacteria? I buy Florastol, not the most expensive. May be someone could suggest something better. Thank you

This is what NIH has to say about tea tree oil:
https://www.poison.org/articles/tea-tree-oil
It is poisonous if swallowed, and can have adverse effects even in small amounts.

IF TEA TREE OIL is used in the mouth, it should be spit out immediatley, and the mouth rinsed. Don't leave it on the gums where it may be accidentally swallowed with saliva.
Tea tree oil has demonstrated antibiotic properties, but as an antifungal it was no better than a placebo.
