Wanting info on Biologics

Posted by staylorrn2000 @staylorrn2000, Jan 7 8:05pm

Hello. I don’t tolerate maintenance inhalers which I’ve tried many. Pulmonologist wants to try me on a biologic but I’m fearful of the side effects. Would anyone want to share their experience with being on a biologic? Thanks!

I have been on mepolizumab (Nucala) for over a year. At first I did not think it was doing anything, but then I realized when talking to my allergist that I'd not needed courses of prednisone, which I often end up needing when I've been traveling. I also realized I'm not getting in bed every night and then opening my nightstand to grab my albuterol.

Just this past week or so, I've had some coughing again, my main asthma symptom which had mostly gone away. So, I'm not sure if anything is waning with the mepolizumab, or perhaps I just have a cold.

@staylorrn2000 - have you gotten to try the dupilumab (Dupixent) yet?

Good morning. I have not tried the Dupixent yet. My co pay is $1,300 per month, which I can’t afford so my pulmonologist office is working on getting me a co pay program. When I saw him again yesterday he said given that I can’t tolerate all of the many asthma med options, (I react badly to everything I’ve tried) having to stay on 2.5 mg of prednisone daily wouldn’t be the worst thing to have to do. I seem to tolerate 2.5 mg daily without side effects (at least non that I can see, but who knows what damage staying in it long term might do internally). From what I’m reading the potential for serious side effects from all these Biologics are many and they haven’t been around that long in comparison to other asthma treatments.

Daughter and I who have lung and autoimmune disease have been on Xolair and Fasenra four years with no side effects. I tried Dupixent once and had neck pain/headache for two days so stopped.

What insurance do you have for the fasenra? Do you use azandme for their free program?

I have Blue Cross Blue Shield. I don't know what azandme is but I am on their discount program. All you have to do is sign up.

I have Medicare/Health Alliance. My doctor’s office is checking into a copay program with the drug manufacturer for me.

It is thru Astra Zeneca. Maker of fasenrs. I was on it but 2025 is proving harder to qualify. Go to azandmeapp.com.

To be honest I don’t know who manufactures Dupixent, I’d have to look it up. My doctor’s office is handling trying to get it for me.
