Looking for tips to stop estradiol cream

Posted by kathym653 @kathym653, Jun 27, 2025

I am 72, had a total hysterectomy over 20 years ago. Took Premarin for (about) 8 years to get me through menopause. A few years ago I was diagnosed with vaginal atrophy, dryness, burning, itching, pain. Was prescribed Estradiol vaginal cream, using 1 gm 3x weekly with success. I've tried to taper off (worried about the estrogen) but the symptoms return. I haven't had a gyn exam for a few years either. I know I'm way overdue but my husband has cancer and it's taken up most of my spare time. Has anyone else been able to successfully stop the cream without rebounding?

I use a mild compounded estradiol cream daily, and have for over 15 years. I started it after 4 years of menopause because my symptoms were gettng worse, not better. I intend to use it for the rest of my life. I reduced the dose by 1/3 about a year ago, with no negative side effects. There are distinct advantages to having some estrogen in our bodies, particularly cardiovascular. Take good care of yourself and your husband, Kathym.

Why do you use a compounded version rather than using Estradiol?

I found the pump did not give me consistent amounts of estrogen. By day 13 out of a 28, cycle I was having menopausal symptoms. It was quite expensive as well. I approached a compounding pharmacy and they created a cream, which lasts for almost 2 months, and costs just a little bit more. And I have no decline in efficacy during that period.

Also, different estradiol creams have different ingredients that can cause allergic reactions or burning. A compounding pharmacist can test for a cream that may not cause you to have the burning.

Hi there, if you have vaginal atrophy( I have it too) it does not go away as we age, in fact without treatment it will worsen. The estrogen cream keeps it at bay. If you stop you may feel ok for a bit but I assure you the burning, dryness, itching, soreness will come back. There are some newer alternatives to the estrogen, one is Intrarosa…works differently and not a hormone. I may try it eventually. Best of luck, it’s not easy to deal with it. Not fair is it!

My gyno prescribed me estradiol cream last month to use vaginally as well as a pea size amount on my face, pea size amount on neck and a pea size amount on my décolleté 3 times weekly. I think it’s supposed to help with wrinkles in those extra areas? I heard that they use this daily in France. Has anyone had success using estradiol this way?

Were you using a pellet with both estradiol and testosterone as well as progesterone and vaginal estradiol. Tha has been the "magic" for my body and psyche.

Don’t stop until you see a gyn!

victoria76- I’m in Ontario. I’m 79 and was on Vagifem for quite a while but it stopped working for my vaginal atrophy. My GYN says that the pellets probably weren’t dissolving properly so I’m now trying estradiol called Imvexxy by Knight. It’s a soft coated pellet you insert and so far so good. Apparently the estradiol cream isn’t available in Canada. Hope this helps. xo
